Covid-19 outbreak declared at St. Charles College

Public Health Sudbury and Districts has declared a COVID-19 outbreak at St. Charles College. This is after one more individual tested positive for the virus. That brings the total to three cases associated with St. Charles College. An outbreak in a school setting is declared when two or more cases of COVID-19 are confirmed are linked and occur within 14 days of one another.
 

Six cases of COVID-19 among case counts yesterday

Among the case counts of Covid-19 yesterday, six were reported by the Porcupine Health Unit. Four cases are linked to the outbreak at Extendicare Kapuskasing. Elsewhere, after five-days of no new cases, the North Bay Parry Sound district health unit announced one new case.
 

Vaccine expected this week – PHSD

The health unit says also says the start of the much-anticipated vaccination program for long-term care residents and high-risk retirement homes will begin this week. That includes Manitoulin Island. The goal is to have the Manitoulin Centennial Manor in Little Current and Manitoulin Lodge in Gore Bay vaccinated by February 5.
 

North Bay city council votes in favour of passenger rail

North Bay City Council has voted in favour of the return of passenger rail. This was a campaign promise by the PC government. The city will now formally urge the provincial government to provide a timeline for the return of passenger rail service from Toronto to Cochrane, discontinued in 2012.
 

Algoma University building a new computer lab

Construction underway on a new computer science and technology computer lab at Algoma University’s. It’s seen as expansion of its current lab. Sault Ste. Marie MP and parliamentary secretary for FedNor Terry Sheehan says Algoma U will receive just under $2 million to increase research and while building a state-of-the-art facility.
 

LTC homes in Nipissing to share $1 million dollars

Long term care homes in Nipissing will share $1 million dollars of the Provinces money, aimed at increasing prevention and containment of COVID-19. The funding will go to cover a 24/7 checkpoint to confirm staff and caregivers are properly screened for symptoms and potential exposures before entering the building, ongoing screening of residents, cleaning, and hiring of new staff.
Homes in Nipissing receiving additional funding during the second wave include:
Cassellholme is receiving an additional $152,000
Waters Edge Care Community is receiving an additional $384,200
Eastholme Home for the Aged is receiving an additional $253,400
Algonquin Nursing Home is receiving an additional $176,800,
Nipissing Manor Nursing Care Centre is receiving an additional $46,000
