Two more deaths tied to COVID-19 outbreaks registered at Long Term Care homes

Another senior at Greater Sudbury’s Amberwood Suites has passed away due to COVID-19. This is the 6th for the home, 34 residents and six staff have caught the virus after an outbreak was declared in early January.

Meanwhile,

One new COVID-19 related death has been reported by the Porcupine Health Unit. The death is the seventh linked to the outbreak at Extendicare Kapuskasing. An outbreak of the virus was declared at the 61-bed facility Jan. 7.
 

Vaccines continue to be administered

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit says it has completed the administration of the first shipment of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. Five hundred and five doses in all was given to long-term care home residents, and 16 doses were administered to front-line staff in long-term care homes.   (Note: A news release states: The vaccination of front-line staff at long-term care homes was done to eliminate vaccine waste)

Meanwhile,

In Greater Sudbury 55 residents at St. Joseph’s Villa have received the first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine as yesterday. The vaccine comes in two doses. Staff hopes that all residents will be inoculated by the end of the week.
 

Taxi fees going up in Sault Ste Marie

Two Sault Ste. Marie taxi companies will now be able to roll out an increase in fees. Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Board approved three fee increases for Soo Yellow Cab and UCAB. Among the increases the drop rate will be moving from $4.90 to $5 while the rate charged per kilometer is now $3.50, up from $3.   Per minute of wait time increased from 75 cents to a dollar.
 

New agreement continues to be negotiated for workers

A new agreement continues to be forged for Glencore miners in Sudbury. The union representing 800 workers is continuing to negotiate with the company to reach a new collective agreement. The four-year contract, negotiated for workers at Glencore’s Integrated Nickel Operations in 2017, expired Jan. 31st.
 

Manitoulin Snowmobile trails remain closed

Snowmobile season on Manitoulin, continues to idle for many… due in large part due to a lack of snow. The Snowdusters say trails by and large remain closed, as another foot of snow is needed before opening could even be considered.
 

Two charged after $86k frauded from a Powassan Bank Account

OPP have charged two people after $86,000 was stolen from a bank account. It happened in Powassan. An investigation found that a bank card for that account was issued at a bank in southern Ontario. The card was used to make several cash withdrawals. Two people are facing charges.

Update: Elizabeth has been located in good health
Original story: Greater Sudbury Police are looking for a missing teen. 15-year-old Elizabeth Richard is 15. She was last seen wearing a black and white Skidoo jacket, brown boots (calf height), a grey hat, and red mittens. She is 5-foot-5 and 130 pounds, with long brown hair and green eyes.
