7-new cases of COVID-19 announced by the PHU

Seven new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed by the Porcupine Health Unit. Of the new cases, five are in Timmins and two are in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls. Two previously reported cases have also screened positive for a variant of concern.
Meanwhile,
One more Algoma District resident has tested positive for COVID-19. The exposure is unknown however nor where specifically they reside. The individual is self-isolating.
 

Sudbury residents 60+ can now get their vaccines

Starting today, April 7, Sudbury district residents aged 60 and older can begin booking appointments to get their COVID-19 vaccines. It’s not Northern Ontario wide however. This change applies only to those public health jurisdictions that have signed on with the provincial booking system.
 

Sudbury driver charged with stunt driving

A 24-year-old from Sudbury has been charged with stunt driving. It happened in Sturgeon Falls. The motorist was caught by West Nipissing OPP travelling 108 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone. OPP were conducting traffic enforcement on Front Street at the time. The driver was issued a seven-day driver’s license suspension and the vehicle was impounded.
 

4% property tax coming to Greater Sudbury homeowners

Greater Sudbury city council has approved a 4 per cent hike in property taxes. It will go along with a 4.8 per cent hike in water bills. For a typical home assessed at $230,000, the city said this means about $10 more a month than 2020 property taxes. The tax hike is slightly over the 3.9 per cent goal council had set, and comes after months of deliberation.
 

16 Timmins Drivers busted for speeding in school zones

Timmins drivers are reminded to slow down as kids head to school. A total of 16 charges were laid for speeding violations in school zones and one other for failure to stop for school bus. It was all part of a recent safety blitz in key areas near McLean Drive.
 

Reconstruction of Cassells Street has begun in North Bay

Reconstruction of Cassells Street in North Bay has begun. Slated to continue into the Summer, the City advises the flow of traffic will be reduced to a single lane in both directions. The majority of the work between now and the target completion date in late July will take place between Shaw Street and the Highway 11/17 bypass. This road work will include the installation of sewers and a watermain.
