Traffic is rerouted due to a disabled train

A disabled train diverted traffic yesterday in Greater Sudbury. It blocked up Marina Road, Elks Club Road and Highway 144 in Onaping. Greater Sudbury Police tweeted out at around 4 p.m. indicating that CP Rail was attempting to get the train moving, with no word on why it stalled.
 

Public Health Sudbury and Districts report zero new cases of COVD-19

Encouraging news yesterday when it comes to new cases of COVID-19. For the first time in three months, Public Health Sudbury and Districts reported zero new cases in its service area. Additionally, six resolved cases, along with a correction that removed one case Monday and another on Tuesday.
 

North Bay city council asking for help for those unable to pay rent

North Bay city council is asking federal and provincial governments to help finance a local initiative, aiming to forgive most of a tenant’s rent arrears. All in an effort to prevent large-scale evictions, the motion is based on a proposal by the Near North Landlords Association (NNLA) and Low Income People Involvement of Nipissing (LIPI), who asked for more than $400,000 from DNSSAB for a rent bank, which would see those in arrears pay one-third of their outstanding balance. Landlords would cover another third and the provincial and federal governments the remaining portion.
 

Timmins area splash pad closed until mid-July

The splash pad in South Porcupine is closed for upgrades until mid-July. Earlier this year, Timmins council awarded a near $400k contract ($394,875) contract for the work. According to the announcement on the city’s website, the new splash pad will have a northern and mining theme and will be comprised of 22 features designed for children of all ages, and an anti-slip rubberized surface for play.
 

New school opening in Blind River this fall

A new French public school is set to open in the Blind River area this fall. In a new partnership between the French and English school board, École Publique de Blind River will be located at 147 Woodward Avenue. The school welcomes its new principal Hélène Rancourt, who brings over 15 years of teaching experience and seven years of experience as a guidance counsellor.
 

One new fire in the North East

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is reporting one new forest fire in the northeastern region. Sault Ste. Marie 3, which is located near Goulais River Provincial Park, is under control at 0.4 of a hectare. Two other fires are burning in the region, Sudbury 5, located near Highway 69, is under control at 13 hectares along with a fire in the Bancroft area.
