One new COVID-19 death reported by the APH

The Algoma District Health Unit says a resident has died of COVID-19. The 5th for the region since the pandemic began, no further information is being released out of respect for the family.
 

PUH reports a surge in COVID-19 cases

The Porcupine Health Unit continues to report a surge in COVID-19 cases. Following recent outbreaks at Ontario Power Generation (OPG) in Timmins and Kirkland Lake Gold Detour Lake Mine north of Cochrane, the health unit reported 128 new cases over the long weekend, with the majority in the Timmins area.
 

North Bay winds up with a $1.3 surplus from 2020

The City of North Bay ended 2020 with a surplus. Just north of $1.3-million dollars ($1,348,629) pending any year-end entries or external audit adjustments. It came in a report, presented at council’s most recent meeting. That amount will now be transferred to the city’s Tax Rate Stabilization Reserve and be used to address COVID-19 related costs in the 2021 budget.
 

North Bay winds up with a $1.3 surplus from 2020

Greater Sudbury Fire Services doused a brush fire over the long weekend. It happened at Lammi’s Road (near Jarvi Road). It was approximately two to three-hectare brush fire in size upon personnel arrival. Crews were on site for several hours because we put out hotspots and ensure there is no opportunity for this fire to start back up.
 

Hundreds of students jobs coming to Sault Ste Marie

585 jobs will be available for youth this Summer in Sault Ste. Marie. It’s thanks to federal government funding of more than $2 million. Sault MP Terry Sheehan said the Canada Student Jobs program offers employers in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors funding for 75 percent of student wages – an increase from the program’s former 50 per cent in order to offer extra assistance during the pandemic.
 

Police respond to a 3-vehicle accident on highway 17

An accident that called out both OPP and Greater Sudbury firefighters and paramedics closed highway 17. It involved three vehicles at Whitefish. Volunteers from Lively and Whitefish were quick to assist and ensure the safety of all involved. There is no word as to the cause of the crash, nor any injuries.

Tippins fees waved at Deloro landfill

With Spring Cleaning in full operation, tipping fees are waived for those are the the Deloro Landfill this week in the Timmins area. Earlier this year, the City of Timmins cancelled the annual spring curbside pickup for the second consecutive year.
 

4 new fires reported in the North East

Four new forest fires had been confirmed in the region. Among the new fires is Sudbury 11, north of Judge Lake, roughly 12 km southwest of St. Charles. That fire is being held at 0.5 of a hectare. Sudbury 12, which is not yet under control, is located west of Highway 69 and Sudbury 13 is located on the northern shore of Ministic Lake, northeast of Espanola, and not yet under control. The fourth fire is near Boulter, Ont., which is east of Bracebridge.
 

Elliot Lake city Council hoping to recycle asphalt stock

Elliot Lake City Council is looking at dealing with a stockpile of old asphalt stock. It has, evidently, accumulated over many years and placed behind the Elliot Lake Dog Park on Senator Road. The hope is that council approves the use of the Recycled Asphalt Pavement towards several projects identified throughout the City.
