One new COVID-19 death reported by Public Health Sudbury and Districts

PHSD reported two new cases of COVID-19 yesterday and one new death. No further information was released. It marks the 30th for the Sudbury jurisdiction since the pandemic was declared in March 2020.
 

Hope for passenger rail…  by 2025

The Ontario government is hoping that within the next 3 – 4 years there will be a potential return for passenger rail between Toronto, North Bay, and Cochrane. To that end, they have identified 2022 as a “target completion date,” for the next stage of planning and design work.
 

Timmins forgives 15-year old 153k loan

The City of Timmins has forgiven a 15-year-old loan worth $153,000. It’s for the ski hill. Timmins council approved writing off the 2006 loan to Mount Jamieson Resort, which was then known as Kamiskotia Snow Resort. The resort also owed the city the $153k from a 2006 loan for $180,000. As of September 2019, the city had only received three payments of $9,000.
 

Two accidents slow traffic, minor injuries only

Sault Ste. Marie Police Service say two people were taken to hospital with minor injuries following a two-vehicle collision. It happened yesterday morning at Lake Street and MacDonald Avenue. It was so involved both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.
Meanwhile,
Four people are injured following a two-vehicle collision in Greater Sudbury yesterday. It happened on Highway 69 north in the Val Caron area Tuesday evening at around the supper hour. As a result, the highway was down to one lane in both directions. Officials say that the injuries were non-life threatening.
 

Algoma steel inks major deal with NY company

Algoma Steel confirmed this week a billion-dollar-plus merger agreement. It is with a New York-based special-purpose acquisition company. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2021, providing the Sault mill with hundreds of millions of dollars to invest in electric arc steelmaking and to reduce its carbon footprint by approximately 70 percent.
 

Cycling Club hoping for new mountain biking trail

The Sault Cycling Club is about halfway has roughly a week to go in its campaign for a mountain bike trail project at Finn Hill. The club is aiming to bring a professionally designed, off-road mountain biking trail to Sault Ste. Marie’s urban core. Construction of the trail is set to begin in the fall.
