Another COVID-19 exposure advisory is issued for Toronto to Timmins flight

Another COVID-19 exposure advisory has been issued for a flight into Timmins. The second, in just as many days… It affects Air Canada flight AC8289 leaving Toronto heading to Timmins at 9:10 p.m, Monday, August 22. People in rows 15 to 19 are considered high-risk and must self-isolate immediately. All other passengers are at low risk for exposure and should self-monitor for symptoms for 10 days.
 

A program being launched to deal with aggressive and invasive grass

A new invasive species program is being launched in Ontario. It’s to try and control an aggressive species known as the common reed. It is a perennial grass from Europe that is considered one of Canada’s worst invasive species. It is spread by seed and root fragments that can be carried by wind, waves, vehicles, and people. It can cause ecological dead zones and damage to at-risk species. Once it’s dried out, it becomes a significant fire hazard.
 

Morgan beach is being donated to the city of Greater Sudbury

Morgan beach behind Chelmsford will soon be under the ownership of Greater Sudbury. Morgan beach (also known as Fireman’s beach) is tucked in behind Chelmsford on 24 acres along Vermillion River. It is being donated by the current owner. For years, it has been a hotly contested piece of land, with many people interested in purchasing it.
 

Mayor Al MacDonald resigns from Cassellholm Home board

North Bay Mayor Al McDonald has resigned from the board of Cassellholme Home for the Aged. His resignation took place yesterday at the start of the Cassellholme board meeting. McDonald was not in attendance, but board chairman Chris Mayne, who serves as a North Bay councillor, confirmed the mayor had stepped down.
 

Weapons complaint turns up nothing

Sault Ste. Marie Police Service was called to the area of Chapple Ave. and Albion St. early yesterday. This was following a report of a man in the area with a rifle. Following a lengthy search, police did not locate anyone matching the description of the person and no firearms has been located. Police did arrest one man in the area who was wanted in connection with an unrelated matter.
 

LU will be back in court to ask for an extension in creditor protection

Laurentian University returns to court today, seeking permission to extend its restructuring process into the new year. The stay of proceedings was set to expire on Aug. 31, protecting it from creditors. It has also requested an extension on the maturity date of $35 million in emergency financing in exchange for a $350,000 extension fee.
 

New Medical centre going up un East Ferris

Construction of a new medical centre in East Ferris is underway. This follows a decision by the municipal council earlier this month to enter into a contract and secure financing for the build. Work is currently taking place on a 1.58-acre property near the corner of Astorville, Corbeil and Big Moose roads.
 

Heavy Rainfall in Sault Ste Marie could cause flooding

Heavy rainfall this weekend in Sault Ste Marie could cause flooding. Fifty to 80 mm of rain is forecast between Friday and Sunday, according to the Regional Conservation Authority says. Another 25 to 50 mm of rain could fall during thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday.
 

Science North continues to boost tourism with roadshow

As tourism continues to try and stay in the black this summer, Science North is hoping to help. To help spur northern Ontario’s tourism sector, Science North will bring its Great Northern Ontario Roadshow to more than 50 communities, starting today. The travelling roadshow lets visitors experience a staycation expo, an attractions showcase and a local market. The roadshow is hoping to create and support 158 jobs in Northern Ontario and generate an estimated $4.3 million in direct and value-added benefits to the economy.
 

Police looking for a missing man: 79-year George Lebrocq

Sudbury and Manitoulin OPP are looking for a missing man. From Espanola, 79-year-old George Lebrocq, 79, is described as being 5’10” and 220 lbs. He has grey hair and is believed to be driving a green 2011 Chevy Silverado with the licence plate number BD81377.
