Sheehan Reelected in Sault Ste Marie
Sault Ste. Marie Liberal incumbent Terry Sheehan is returning to Ottawa. After two of waiting, the mail-in ballots pushed Sheehan’s past conservative competitor Sonny Spina by 247 votes different.
Sudbury to contribute 100k in services to curling championship
The City of Greater Sudbury will hope to contribute $100,000 in-kind services toward three Curling Canada events the city is hosting. They go in March of next year. The city’s finance and administration committee made the unanimous decision during Tuesday night’s meeting. It now awaits ratification from city council.
Boiler System to replace at Timmins City Hall
A company has signed on to replace the boiler system at Timmins city hall. The contract is for $287,500.. and is good for the bid on the work. The current boilers are at end of life, and were installed about 1994.
Alarms heard at Cambrian College were a fire alarm
Alarms could be heard coming from Cambrian College yesterday afternoon. Dan Lessard says there was never a reason to panic. It was nothing more than a fire drill. Anyone with questions should contact the school.
Boiler System to be replaced at Timmins City Hall
The Province of Ontario has given Near North District School Board approval to tender a new replacement school for the former W. J. Fricker Senior Public School. The $20 million investment will provide 308 student spaces for students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6 and 73 new licensed childcare spaces.
Rainfall warning continues in North Bay
The rain continues to fall in the North Bay, and the rainfall warning remains in effect. Environment Canada says the rain is expected to move out this afternoon. Additional rainfall amounts of 10 to 30 mm are expected through this afternoon. All up, since the first sprinkles Tuesday evening, total rainfall amounts could reach, in some places 125mm.
Brian Bigger gives his 6th state of address
Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger gave his sixth State of the City address yesterday, online. The mayor spoke on a number of points, including the pandemic. Bigger also talked on major concerns over the opioid crisis, and his conversations with Ontario’s associate minister for mental health and addictions to find solutions. Bigger says the city is continuing to work with experts add the city has also expanded shelter bed capacity and offered hotel rooms when the need has arisen.
Sundridge Council looking to deal with Geese
Sundridge city council is directing municipal staff to work on what they’re calling a chronic goose problem involving waterfront land. Some say the issue of geese on people’s lakefront properties seems to be getting worse. Allowing dogs at the waterfront as a deterrent was also discussed.
Timmins Chamber of Commerce announce new president
Timmins Chamber of Commerce has a new president. Rob Knox was sworn in Wednesday night to lead the business organization for the next year. Knox says he will continue to advocate at all levels of government for the betterment of the our city, and the betterment of the local northeast region.
