New Sudbury Foodbank Opens for families in need

New Sudbury area families are being helped by a newly opened food bank. This is following the closure of the Dollard Avenue location last year. The newly reopened location will be open once a week, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tuesdays, he said. The goal is to help hundreds of families in need along the Lasalle Boulevard corridor.
 

Central Manitoulin Council asks MTO for help with Highway 542

Central Manitoulin council has passed a motion ask the Ministry of Transportation to move on repairs to Highway 542 as soon as possible. This follows a recommendation from the Roads Committee asking the highest priority be given to the work.
 

Discussion continues over passenger rail in the North East

The discussion continues regarding the return of Ontario Northland passenger train service to the North East. ONTC officials told the District of Muskoka council last week that the hope is to be back on the track by the mid-2020s. Passenger Operations is working with Metrolinx and also collaborating with the MTO to put this up in a business case, in front of government officials.
 

Youth in Sault Ste Marie are being offered a “Job-skills” program

Youth in Sault Ste Marie are being offered a leg up when it comes to employment. The Sault Community Career Centre is offering a free youth employment program, providing young people with job skills and hands-on work experience. To that end, they’re now accepting applications.
 

Remembrance Day Service planned for Memorial Park

A 2021 Remembrance Day service is being planned for Memorial Park on Nov. 11, beginning at 10:35 a.m. The Legion is working with the City of Greater Sudbury, Public Health Sudbury and Districts, and the Greater Sudbury Police Service to ensure a safe and successful event.
 

New hub in downtown North Bay nears completion

The city of North Bay says outdoor courts getting close to being finished. This is as a skateboard is slated to be installed beside the courts to complete the vision of an active park. Located by the bus terminal to help draw people downtown. The city says it’s all part of a master plan adopted by council.
 

Parking bans go into place November 1st

While it seems a little too early yet for winter, some winter parking bans take effect Monday. In Timmins, overnight parking is banned on most city streets. It allows safer, more efficient snow removal. The city says “Park on the street?” you could pay a hefty fine, and your car could be towed.
 

NOSM aims to close the gap on the physician shortage

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine is attempting to close the gap when it comes to addressing the physician shortage in Northern Ontario. To that end, they’ve graduated over 800 physicians since 2005. The hope is to graduate 5 classes, supplying over 300 physicians needed in the north.
 

Upgrades on St. Andrew’s United Complete

Upgrades on the small chapel located on the second floor of St. Andrew’s United Church in Greater Sudbury is complete. The renewal project highlights the longstanding history and future of St. Andrew’s United Church and Huntington University who aided in the upgrades, which included upgrades to the heating, ventilation, and lighting.
 

Baker, MacDonald will not seek re-election

Mattawa’s mayor Dean Backer says he will not run for re-election next fall. Backer has served as mayor for 22 years as mayor. Meanwhile, North Bay Mayor Al McDonald has reaffirmed that he will not run for a fourth term, saying it’s time for someone else to take the seat.
 

Science Timmins back opens “Guinness World Records” exhibit

Science Timmins is back up with a new exhibit. The Science of Guinness World Records launched at the downtown Timmins facility this week. It is currently on tour in northern communities and will be there until Dec. 2.
 

Timmins Hospital operating above capacity

The Temiskaming Hospital continues to run at a 115% occupancy rate. That means 9 more beds per day than the hospital has room for. As a result, they are currently operating in surge capacity mode, and are thanking the public for their patience while they provide care.
