Ontario will double the number of long-term home inspectors

The Ontario government says it will double the number of long-term care home inspectors within the next year. $20 million has been allocated to hire 193 new inspections staff by the fall of 2023.
 

Greater Sudbury looking into housing for vulnerable residents

The City of Greater Sudbury administration has been asked to come up with a plan to house vulnerable residents ahead of colder weather. The decision came this week at the close of the city council meeting following a lengthy discussion.
 

Timmins Police looking into the theft of two sleds, and trailer

The Timmins Police is seeking public assistance regarding two missing snowmobiles and a black double axel trailer. They are missing from a residence in the south end. They are looking to speak to the driver of a dark-colored truck, possibly a Ram.  For full details, contact Timmins Police.
 

Sault Ste Marie receives $16.8 in OMP funding

The City of Sault Ste. Marie has received its Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund allocation for 2022. Sault Ste. Marie’s allocation for 2022 is $16.8 mil nearly ½ million more than this year.
 

North Bay, YMCA receives afterschool program funding

The province will assist with after-school programs in North Bay. The YMCA Northeastern Ontario North Bay and District was given $99,750 and the City of North Bay received $72,000.  In the program, sport, recreation and physical activity, personal wellness, anti-bullying, nutrition education, and internet safety are all taught.
 

Latest work in Timmins on connecting link wraps tomorrow

The latest work in the connecting link is wrapping up this week. It involves the construction between Thériault Blvd. and the Mattagami River: The hope is that by tomorrow the road will be back up to traffic.  Finishing touches on paving, line painting, and concrete are being done. Line painting is expected this Thursday or Friday and new traffic lights next week.
 

Spanish Scotiabank will relocate to Elliot Lake in 2022

After 20 years, Scotiabank will close its doors in Spanish. While it won’t happen until the Spring of next year, letters have gone out to bank customers. It will relocate to Manitoba Road, Elliot Lake.
 

Christian Provenzano will not run for re-election

Ste. Marie Mayor Christian Provenzano has already confirmed his name will not be on the ballot, while Timmins Mayor George Pirie says he will be running in the upcoming provincial election for the Conservatives. Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger says he is running in next year’s municipal election.
 

Sault Ste Marie looks to debate single-use plastics

Sault Ste. Marie city council will look into a motion to ban on single-use plastics in the city. If passed, it would see a stop on items like plastic grocery bags, straws, stir sticks, and plastic cutlery used by restaurants.
 

Chi-Cheemaun floats 132 day sailing season

The Owen Sound Transportation Company says the Chi-Cheemaun Ferry servicing Manitoulin Island has had another successful year, despite decreased service. In the 2021 season, they had a total of 132 sailing days.
 

3-new beds added to the Temiskaming Hospital

And three new beds are coming to the Temiskaming Hospital. This is as the hospital continues to run at 115% capacity or surge capacity.  They do stress the ER is open for those in need.
