Special meeting of Greater Sudbury called for tonight

A special meeting of Greater Sudbury city council is on for tonight. Its entire agenda is to catch up on outstanding agenda items. Included in the list is a motion seeking assurances from Kingsway Entertainment District partners. Although site preparation work is proceeding on the Kingsway Entertainment District project, there have been no written commitments to the project beyond this initial work.
 

22 Wing has their first female commander

22 Wing in North Bay has a new commander. Lieutenant-Colonel Juliana Bruns, United States Air Force is their first female commander taking charge of Detachment 2, First Air Force and the 22 Wing Operations Support Squadron. Lt.-Col. Bruns, a member of the United States Air Force for 17 years, accepted the new role virtually addressing an audience of over 100 from both sides of the border.
 

Elliot Lake city council reminding residents of their Winter Parking Ban

The City of Elliot Lake is the latest city to remind its residents of a winter parking ban. Now in place, there will be no overnight parking on municipal streets until March 31st of next year. Vehicles parked on the street between the hours of midnight and 7 a.m. may be ticketed and/or towed.
 

Coleman Township says Larose Bridge will be complete next Summer

Coleman Township says the Larose Bridge will be complete in June 2022. The project to reconstruct the bridge between Coleman Township and the town of Cobalt on Kerr Lake Road has been delayed due to waits for steel girders. The girders are now expected to arrive in the second or third week of November.
 

City of Greater Sudbury looks at first draft budget

The City of Greater Sudbury’s draft budget for 2022 has been constructed, and it includes a number of increases. In the mix, a 3.2 percent property tax increase, a special capital levy of 1.5 percent and a water and wastewater rate increase of 4.8 percent. City administration tabled its proposed 2022 budget yesterday, revealing the property tax increase… said to be greater than the three percent maximum city council had directed.
 

Blue-Green Algae Bloom reported in Ruth Lake

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit is advising residents of Ruth Lake of a harmful algae bloom. They say, depending on their proximity to the algae bloom, wind direction, water flow… environmental conditions that cannot be predicted or controlled.
 

Wildlife experts  – Don’t dump your pumpkin in the woods

Wildlife experts say when it comes to dumping your pumpkin,  putting it in the bush… can do more harm than good, with several unintended consequences. While they do have a nutritional value… they’re not natural to Northern Ontario and might not be digested well by some animals. Other factors include the attraction of wild animals and say it’s better to put them out with the trash.
 

Two injured in Sault Ste Marie Collision

A pair of Sault Ste Marie motorists sustained minor injuries yesterday, following a two-vehicle collision. It happened in the city’s west end. Police responded to the scene of the accident on Base Line Road near Allens Side Road at approximately 8 a.m. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
 

Grade 9 students at St. Charles College wrap up their clothing drive

Grade 9 students at St. Charles College have wrapped up their winter clothing drive for the season, collected numerous winter clothing items they hope will help keep those in need warm. As part of the Grade 9 curriculum, students took part in the community outreach program as part of a culminating project this semester.
