New COVID-19 measures coming into place, in Greater Sudbury, tomorrow
Public Health Sudbury and Districts will reinstate some COVID-19 restrictions recently lifted by the province. This is as COVID-19 cases in the area continue to rise. They include capacity limits indoors, physical distancing requirements, masking requirements at organized public events, both indoors and outdoors, and requiring proof of vaccination for anyone aged 12 and older participating in organized sports. The restrictions will take effect Nov.10… that’s tomorrow at 12:01 a.m. Once again, this is for Greater Sudbury only. With 257 current cases, Sudbury has the highest rate of active cases among the province’s 34 health units.
The city of Greater Sudbury is looking into a mandate that visitors to city-owned meeting and community gathering facilities, should be fully vaccinated. That comes on a recommendation by the city administration.
Meanwhile, the health unit is warning the public of a potential exposure to COVID-19. It’s linked to an establishment in the 470 block of Notre Dame Ave. Anyone at that location October 27th between 9 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on that date should contact the health unit.
Police, Fire, EMS respond to vehicle rollover in North Bay
Police, the Fire Department and EMS responded to a major accident involving two vehicles at the corner of Algonquin Avenue and Jane Street yesterday. It happened just before 5 p.m. and was so involved, it sent a vehicle onto its roof on the sidewalk across the street from ecole secondaire Algonquin. While there was no word on any injuries, traffic was blocked from both directions.
Mattagami Boulevard South once again a one-way road
Timmins Police are reminding drivers that Mattagami Boulevard South, once used as a detour is now, once again, a one-way road. Slated for southbound traffic only, the change has lead to a few near misses. Since the spring, the road has been used for two-way traffic as a detour around the Connecting Link work being done on Algonquin Boulevard.
Sault Ste Marie’s Wellington Street East closed for two days
A portion of Wellington Street East will be closed starting today, for a two-day period. The closure, is necessary to facilitate a lateral repair. Signage will be posted to direct traffic through the area along designated detour routes. Motorists are urged to be cautious and obey all detour signage.
Blue-Green Algae bloom detected on Lake Apsey
The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks along and Public Health Sudbury and Districts is warning of a blue-green algae bloom. It’s in the Lake Apsey area. The health unit is advising residents to avoid using or drinking the water where blooms of algae are visible.
COVID-19 count in Chartwell Barcley House now 38
The total case count of COVID-19 involved in the Chartwell Barclay House in North Bay is, as of news time, 38 cases. The 14 new cases reported yesterday morning brought the total active cases in the region to 42, with 36 in Nipissing District and six in Parry Sound District.
Two South Porcupine buildings slated for construction will reduce sewer capacity
Two new apartment buildings in South Porcupine will decrease the sewer capacity in that area. Albeit by one percent, it did make a report to the City of Timmins. Last month, a zoning change was approved for 185 Crawford St. to allow two three-storey buildings with six apartments each on the lot. Infrastructure is one of the concerns of residents in the neighbourhood.
Englehart Legion branch 104 re-opens following renovations
The Englehart Royal Canadian Legion Branch 104 has re-opened its doors following some renovations. While the upstairs area is ready for use again, the basement area, where many of the renovations have been carried out, is still awaiting the final component of new flooring. The public is being welcomed in on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 1 a.m., and on Sundays for special occasions.
Timmins Police is investigating graffiti
Rememberance Day is Thursday, and the Timmins Cenotaph has been hit by vandalism. It happened at the entrance to Hollinger Park. The cenotaph is owned and maintained by the city. It’s being cleaned. Police are investigating.
Garbage tags in North Bay could be on the rise
North Bay city council is looking at fee changes when it comes to garbage day. Come January 1st, should council agree the price will be increasing from $1 to $2 per tag. Council has already approved a reduction in the number of containers residents are allowed to put to the curb, from three to two.
