New restrictions come into effect today, for Greater Sudbury

Sudbury reinstated some COVID-19 restrictions, due to the rise in cases. They will include capacity limits indoors, physical distancing requirements, masking requirements at organized public events, both indoors and outdoors, and requiring proof of vaccination for anyone aged 12 and older participating in organized sports.
 

APH announces 1 new COVID-19 death

Algoma Public Health is reporting one COVID-19. Reported as the ninth COVID-related death, it was announced yesterday. Out of “respect for the family,” no further information is being released.
 

A one-time funding increase coming to Nipissing Serenity Hospice

The province is providing a one-time increase in funding for Nipissing Serenity Hospice. In the amount of $375,000, that represents a 36 percent increase from last year and brings their 2021 funding to $1,425,000. The Hospice says the funding will help address the financial pressures of the pandemic.
 

Greater Sudbury firefighters work to contain house fire on Poplar street

Greater Sudbury firefighters responded to the seen of a blaze yesterday, on Poplar Street. The details are few except to say the public was asked to avoid the area. There were no injuries or occupants in the home, but there is heavy smoke.
 

Blind River OPP looking for suspects following motor theft

Blind River OPP are looking for suspects following the theft of four outboard motors from a local business. Missing are two Honda outboard motors and two Yamaha outboard motors from three different boats. Approximate value of the four motors is $46,000. Descriptors are on our website.

Replica weapon leads to school lockdown, teen charged

A 17-year-old Greater Sudbury boy is in custody following a lockdown. It happened at Lasalle Secondary School yesterday afternoon. It began with a weapons complaint at the school itself. The school was placed in lockdown in order to ensure the safety of students and staff. After speaking with the youth, officers located a replica firearm on school grounds. He is now facing a number of charges.
 

Special memorial project slated for Cobalt Veterans

Remembrance Day is just one day a way now, and a special memorial project is slated to be held at the Cobalt Veterans Cemetery in Haileybury. Many of the veterans’ graves will be marked with candles to create a visual ceremony of respect and remembering in the afternoon and evening of November 11.
 

Tender accepted for work at Gore-Bay Manitoulin Airport

A tender has been accepted by the Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport committee for the rehabilitation and renovation work to be done at the airport. Chosen from one of four companies that bid to carry out the designs, A tender price of nearly $580 ($573,430.50) was chosen that will improve passenger safety and security, emergency responses and the flow of traffic.
 

Review of LU’s real estate holdings will wrap up this month

The consultants’ review of Laurentian University’s real estate holdings continues. It’s expected to be done sometime around the end of November. That said, the university’s president does not expect the full report to be made public. Some are concerned that Laurentian may sell off some of the greenspace surrounding the university. A campaign has been launched to protect the area.
