Sudbury is now Ontario’s Hot Spot for COVID-19 says science table, health unit
Canada’s national science table says with the uptick of COVID-19 in the Province, Sudbury is the hot spot. This comes as the nickel city has the highest weekly increase in cases of all the health units across Ontario. PHSD has recently reintroduced COVID-19 restrictions for the city.
Two classes at Woodland Public School dismissed “Out of an abundance of caution”
Two classes at Woodland Public School in North Bay will be learning remotely this week. They’ve been dismissed out “of an of what the NNDSB and Health Unit calls an “abundance of caution”. This is after they were informed of two presumptive cases of COVID-19 that involve individuals of the Woodland Public School community. At this time there are no positive COVID-19 cases at Woodland Public School.
Property purchased for a new school in the Valley
The Conseil scolaire Catholique Nouvelon in Greater Sudbury has finalized the purchase of a piece of property that will become a new French-language Catholic school. For the valley, the property, measuring about 6.6 hectares, is located in Val Therese on Municipal Road 80 at the intersection of Shirley Avenue. The new school will serve children who currently attend Ecole Notre-Dame and Ecole St-Joseph in Hanmer; and Ecole Ste-Therese in Val Therese.
Mining week starts this week in North Bay
The city of North Bay will be digging into another mining week, starting today. Going until the 21st of November, the event, hosted by the Northern Gateway Branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy will highlight the importance of mining in everyday life through a series of workshops and events. North Bay is home to 60 mining-related companies and has become a major employer in the area.
12-Cases of COVID-19 at Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre
The Solicitor General’s office has confirmed, there are currently 12 cases of COVID-19 associated with the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre. While screening is being done of new inmates, the centre in Sault Ste Marie is now giving inmates the option to be tested for COVID-19. They are then being housed in a separate area from the general population for 14 days.
HSN opens their new Children’s Treatment Centre
HSN says they’ve opened their Children’s Treatment Centre, and it’s quite the sight to see. Bright and beautiful it was designed in consultation with families involved. The rehabilitation program provides assessment, treatment consultation and education for about 2,000 kids and young adults with motor and communication impairments.
Algoma Steel moving to Electic Arc Furnaces
Algoma Steel is giving the nod to the Province in helping them transition to electric arc furnaces. A move away from blast-furnaces, the move comes after an announcement earlier this year by the federal government of funding to help the steel plant with a $700 million construction of the new machines. The board of directors gave final approval to the investment, and the transition can now move ahead.
Connecting link will move to downtown in 2022
Work on ‘Connecting Link’ in Timmins, is now shifting toward the city’s downtown core. 2022 will see work being done on Algonquin between Theriault and Mountjoy Street. Over the next three years, work on the Connecting Link will extend from Theriault Boulevard eastward to Brunette Road. The plan includes a proposal to remove the overpass east of Spruce Street. It comes with a city council approved as of $3 million ask, of the Province.
Potential Risk of COVID-19 at Good life Gym in Sault Ste Marie
Algoma Public Health is warning the public of a potential COVID-19 exposure. It’s for anyone who was at GoodLife Fitness on Second Line E. on N in Sault Ste Marie. Anyone there on November 8th from 3 pm – 430 pm or the 9th from 1 pm – 230 pm should contact the health unit.
