GPS looking for Missing 12-year-old
Greater Sudbury Police Service is trying to locate a missing child. 12-year-old Aidan Southwind. Aidan was last seen Sunday evening around 9:15 p.m. in New Sudbury. When last seen Aidan was wearing black dress pants, black Nike runners and a reversible blue/black winter coat with a fur hood.
Warnings of winter weather in North Bay, Elliot Lake, Sudbury
Drivers in North Bay, Elliot Lake, and Greater should drive with a little extra caution later today into tomorrow, with a nod from Environment Canada, that some dicey weather could be on the way. A wintery mix of snow, ice pellets and possibly freezing rain will begin overnight. Several hours of freezing rain is possible before the precipitation changes to rain tomorrow afternoon.
Outbreak declared at West Nipissing home for the aged
A respiratory outbreak has been declared at Au Château Home for the Aged in West Nipissing. It’s in what’s known as Section “A” of the residence. The health unit says the causative agent is COVID-19. The declaration was made after the Health Unit was made aware of two people who tested positive for COVID-19.
Cobalt man charged after driving into a residence
Temiskaming OPP has charged a 32-Cobalt man following a motor vehicle collision with a residence. It happened on Rorke Avenue in the City of Temiskaming Shores. A further investigation revealed that once the vehicle had struck the structure, the driver had allegedly drove away. He was subsequently located and arrested. Police are warning the public of the dangers of driving impaired.
Sault Ste Marie city council starts to move away from single-use plastics
Sault Ste Marie city council has voted in favour of investigating the ban of single-use plastics in the public sector. This week they unanimously directed staff to move forward with a process geared to banning single-use plastics. It will include
consultations to hear the views of the public, businesses, not-for-profits and other organizations.
City of Greater Sudbury post a budget surplus of $3.8 million, currently
The City of Greater Sudbury has posted a 2021 budget surplus of approximately $3.8 million. That said, that is as of Aug. 31 against a total operating budget of $641 million. The city says COVID-19 continues to be a factor in daily operations, and that number is subject to change.
NOSM wants feedback on becoming Canada’s first stand-alone University
The Northern Ontario School of Medicine wants to transition into Canada’s first standalone medical university, and its dean it hoping to see support in Timmins. This follows a pair of open consultation sessions late last week seeking feedback and to generate some local discussions about what they call a worsening health crisis in the region.
Town of Cobalt to provide financial support for Heritage Silver Trail
The Town of Cobalt has provided financial support to the Cobalt Historical Society in regard to the Heritage Silver Trail. $1,300 to purchase insurance coverage for the site. The town says the trail shows off a unique concentration of mines and mill remnants, open-cut veins, and unique elements of the townsite.
