COVID-19 vaccinations for kids are now open in Ontario

The Province of Ontario says appointments for COVID-19 vaccinations for children aged five to 11 in Ontario open today. Spots will be available as of 8 a.m. ET. Appointments can be booked through the COVID-19 vaccination portal and contact centre; directly through public health units using their own booking system; and with participating pharmacies.
 

Rota appointed as speaker of the house for another term

Nipissing-Timiskaming MP Anthony Rota has been re-elected as Speaker of the House of Commons. Rota, who has represented the riding for all but four years since first elected to Parliament in 2004, faced six other MPs who let their names stand for the position.
 

First Nation community declares state of emergency over blastomycosis infection

Constance Lake First Nation is declaring a state of emergency. It’s due to the outbreak of a lung infection in the community. At last report, there were at least nine people who had tested positive for blastomycosis. Its believed three deaths have been tied to the infection. At least eight people have been transferred to hospitals in Sault Ste. Marie, Ottawa, Sudbury, North Bay and Timmins.
 

Passenger rail rolls out on a test run

Passanger rail rolled out from North Eastern Ontario yesterday heading south for the first time in 9-years. Seven Northern mayors joined others including ONTC President and CEO Corina Moore and Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli for a test run that left North Bay at 6 a.m. and rolled into Toronto around noon. Earlier this month, Ontario Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney named Timmins as the northern terminus for a proposed reintroduction of passenger rail service from Toronto.
 

International Program starting up at Canadore College

International studies based at Canadore College is taking off once again, with students studying abroad. In a release, the college says to internationalize its campuses, they need to send domestic students to study and engage in global experiences abroad, on top of welcoming international students. That includes sending students to countries like Mexico, Ukraine, Costa Rica and Ireland. Canadore has received $463,000 to send 76 students to other countries over the next four years.
 

Four schools with Conseil Scolaire Catholique Nouvelon school board close due to COVID-19

Four schools in Sudbury and one in Spanish are closed due to COVID-19. All of them part of the Conseil Scolaire Catholique Nouvelon school board. École St-Antoine, École Sainte-Anne (Spanish), École St-Pierre, École St-Augustin and École St-Dominique. Each school will be closed until Nov. 29. Classes will resume on Nov. 30. All associated daycares are also closed, except for École St-Augustin, where the infant and toddler program open remains in operation. All schools are still open for online learning.
 

Kirkland Lake OPP looking into alleged attempted arson

Kirkland Lake OPP is investigating a case of attempted arson. It happened early yesterday on Taylor Avenue in the Town of Kirkland Lake. The incident is under investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
 

A new building project is  aiming to help seniors

A new building project in New Sudbury aims to help the housing squeeze for city seniors. At Monday’s meeting of the planning committee, members approved unanimously a rezoning application by the Greater Sudbury Housing Corporation. This will enable the corporation to build a 14-unit affordable housing complex on Sparks Street, which runs parallel to Lasalle Boulevard.
 

Manitoulin Firefighters running low on drivers

The Municipality of Central Manitoulin’s fire department… has their own fire of sorts they’re trying to keep at bay. Out of a roster of 38 volunteer firefighters, only 12 are licensed to drive the fire trucks. Six firefighters are ready to take their road tests and more will be ready in the months ahead, but they haven’t been able to book appointments until the end of June. The shortage of licensed drivers is tied to a backlog of drive tests, which spans across the province.
