Two cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Sault Ste Marie School
Two new cases of COVID-19 have come up in Sault Ste Marie Schools. Korah Collegiate and Vocational School and R.M. Moore both have individuals that have tested positive for COVID-19. One person at each school has been affected. Algoma Public Health has alerted parents and guardians. The health unit has been working to identify close contacts.
Power knocked out for multiple areas in Northern Ontario
The power was knocked out for a time in a number of locations across Northern Ontario yesterday. Included in that list, North Bay, in the Peninsula road area. Greater Sudbury and Sault Ste Marie also reported issued. High winds were said to the be the cause.
LU gets financial help from the Province of Ontario
Laurentian University is getting help from the Province of Ontario. Financial support is coming in from the Ontario Ministry Colleges and Universities. The financial terms of the support from the province include $35 million to refinance what’s known as the existing DIP (debtor-in-possession).
Snow depth down across a number of regions
No surprise, but the average snow depth measured by the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority… is down. On December 15th in North Bay, Corbeil and Chisholm, the average snow depth for all sites was 10.1 cm or 56% normal. The water equivalence also drained a little, to 27 mm or 98% normal.
City of Timmins looking for environment input
The city of Timmins is looking for input on how it should be thinking environmentally over the next year. Environmental coordinator Christina Beaton says that as it formulates a community action plan, there’s a survey on the city website. The survey up until January 3rd
Sault Ste Marie Foodbank is in need of donation
The Sault Ste Marie, Salvation Army Food Bank is seeing an increase, especially when it comes to seniors. In November, at its height, the foodbank had 71 seniors in one day. While the numbers of people using food banks in Ontario may be up 23 percent, the Sally Ann numbers were 115 percent over last November’s numbers.
SAH posting an operations surplus
The Sault Area Hospital is posting an operations surplus. $400,000 according to the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee chair’s report to the board of directors open December meeting earlier this week. This is the first time all year that they have issued a surplus as opposed to a deficit. This surplus compares to an expected deficit of $2.9 million year-to-date.
Greater Sudbury Police looking for a missing teen
Greater Sudbury Police are looking for a missing 14-year-old girl. Jasmine Bertrand was reportedly last seen on Dec. 5 and has been described as 4’9” and 100 lbs. Her shoulder-length hair is half black and half dyed red. She has a pierced septum and hazel eyes. She was last seen wearing grey pants, a blue plaid shirt, a white bucket hat and was carrying a black backpack. She could be in the North Bay area.
