LU gets 5-new members to its board of governors
Sudbury’s Laurentian University has five new members to its board of governors. This is after 11 members of the board resigned last week on the same day a provincial bailout was announced. In February, the university announced it was insolvent and it has been restructuring since. Since then, 30 programs have been cut and around 200 staff and faculty members lost their jobs. The university said the following people have been appointed to the board of governors: Debbi Nicholson, Don Duval, Robert Brouillette, Gerald (Gerry) Bilodeau and Jeff Bangs.
Director of Education calls it a career after nearly 4 decades
After 37 years in education, the Director of Education for the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board is calling it a career. Anna Marie Bitonti is retiring next spring. She was appointed Director of Education in 2002. The board says the recruitment process is getting started with Bitonti’s last day to be finalized once a selection has been made, to ensure a smooth transition.
OPP bust a driver ripping through Latchford going 100kph
Temiskaming OPP has laid charges following a traffic stop in Latchford. This is after stopping a southbound commercial motor vehicle, travelling in excess of 100 kilometres per hour (km/h) in a posted 60 km/h zone. The 23-year-old driver from Lasalle, Quebec is charged with “Race a motor vehicle – stunt”. The vehicle was towed and impounded for 14 days.
Possible COVID-19 exposure on Polar Bear Express
The Porcupine Health Unit has issued an advisory of possible high-risk exposure to COVID-19. It is for the Friday, Dec. 17, Ontario Polar Bear Express from Cochrane to Moosonee that left at 9 a.m. Regardless of vaccination status, people who sat in coach five should self-isolate for 10 days from the exposure and self-monitor for symptoms. They should also get tested immediately and again on Dec. 24.
Collision on Truck brings out Sault Fire, Police and EMS
A major collision stalled traffic on Trunk Road in Sault Ste Marie yesterday. It was so involved it required firefighters and EMS. Traffic was backed up as the scene was cleared. The Westbound lanes of Trunk Road were backed up after a three-vehicle collision occurred there between South Market and Boundary Roads.
Injuries were treated at the scene.
Algoma U announces a new VP of Finance and Operations
Algoma University announced their new vice-president of finance and operations.
Shannon Brooks will fill the role starting Jan. 10, 2022.
She has 22 years experience in post-secondary education as an executive, as well as two terms as chair of the Colleges Ontario Finance Officers.

Three more SAH workers fired over COVID-19 mandate
Three more Sault Area Hospital employees the facility says chose not to comply with its COVID-19 Health Care Worker Management Policy within the extended time have been sacked.
This is on top of the 13 reported fired in late November for not adhering to SAH’s vaccine policy.
“Due to extenuating circumstances, some individuals were placed on unpaid leave and provided with an extension beyond the November 2021 deadline,” Brandy Sharp Young, SAH manager of communications and media services, told the Sault Star Tuesday in an e-mail. “Those extensions have ended.”
Timiskaming Health Unit Declares outbreaks at two locations
The Timiskaming Health Unit has declared outbreaks at the following two locations:
Temagami Public School
• Gorilla Dojo in Kirkland Lake
An outbreak is defined as two or more laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases in the same location. The cases must be within a 14-day period and must have an epidemiological link where at least one case could have reasonably acquired their infection in the location.
The Timiskaming Health Unit has been working closely with the affected organizations to ensure all necessary contact tracing is being completed.
