A notable flag raising took place in Timmins yesterday. It was to mark Community Living Month.

“Boots-on-the-ground” security patrols are returning to downtown Sault Ste. Marie. City council agreed this week to seek proposals from private security companies for foot patrols based out of an office at the downtown plaza.

The city of Elliot Lake is informing residents that the intersection of Ontario Avenue and Hillside Drive North will be closed to all traffic beginning Tuesday, May 21 until Friday, May 31. All businesses and residential buildings in the area will remain accessible.

The latest jobs report for Nipissing in March were a bit of a mixed bag. 496 job postings were recorded that month. They were down nearly 9% from a year earlier. However, the month-over-month change is described as a “significant” increase, with job postings up nearly 21%.

When Timmins city meets at the end of this month they will hear a report on whether there should be a four-way stop at Sixth Ave. and Birch St.

Mental Health is getting another boost. This is as the Province has kicked in $2.5M for youth mental health care in Sudbury. Money will be directed to provide up to six months of live-in treatment programs for youth aged 12 to 17

A couple of road projects in Mattawa and West Nipissing are receiving cash from Queen’s Park. $305,000 for detailed design work with the rehabilitation of Main Street from the Belanger Bridge to the Hwy 17 Roundabout in Mattawa.

For its 52nd year, the Timmins Multicultural Festival is adding a second day. The traditional festival is set for Sunday, May 26th in the arena at the Mac.

In Sault Ste Marie, a phone issue is making things difficult for Sault Police to contact Rogers wireless customers. While land lines work fine (with various providers) “Bell’s connection to the Rogers network is experiencing challenges,” says a Thursday morning release from police.  Bell is aware and working to correct the problem.
