There have been complaints of another suspected “dust” event in the community of Falconbridge. Residents living close to the Glencore Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations smelter say a dusty substance fell on their vehicles and properties close to the smelter sometime early Thursday morning.

Thankfully, there were no serious injuries after a crossing guard was struck by a vehicle yesterday morning. It happened in the city’s south end. NBPS is stepping up enforcement and reminding motorists that failing to stop can lead to hefty fines and demerit points.

The reopening of the main entrance to the Timmins arena is behind schedule. Two weeks behind. The project is to update the accessible entrance at the McIntyre Community Building. The city expects to reopen the stairs and ramp into the arena on Nov. 10.

Sault Ste. Marie Police say a previously missing teen has been located. Gabriel was the subject of a missing person report on Dennis Street. He is in good health.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie has extended curbside leaf and yard waste collection for now. They will continue to do so on a week-by-week basis as long as the weather cooperates.

Speed cameras will soon be a thing of the past in Sudbury. Two weeks is what they have left, after Premier Doug Ford’s government passed legislation this week to ban them.

Glencore says it is investigating new complaints of dust from its smelter in Falconbridge. To that end they’ve curtailed operations for the time being. It has contacted the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, as well as the City of Greater Sudbury and Public Health Sudbury and Districts.

The City of Sudbury is setting the stage for 2026-27 budget talks. A draft budget for next year, into 2027, will be released Nov. 4. It is anticipated to kick off city council budget talks with a tax levy increase of 3.2% to 4.4%

With one councillor stepping down, Cochrane is seeking someone to fill the vacant seat for the remainder of the term. In a letter dated Oct. 14 and attached to the town’s Oct. 28 meeting agenda, France Bouvier announced that she was stepping down.

The North Bay Police Service will be hearing from downtown businesses to gauge the viability of continuing a police hub on Main Street. Back in June, the service opened the hub, a semi-permanent storefront aiming to increase police visibility, deter crime, and create a feeling of safety.

Algoma Steel Group says they will accelerate its electric arc furnace transformation. An earlier transition goal away from blast furnace and coke oven operations pegged at late 2026 to early 2027 is now being moved up a year.

While it’s over 6 months away, Colbalt is looking to form a committee to organize Canada Day when it comes back around in 2026.

Regional fire personnel are reminding residents that with the time change this weekend, it’s a great time to change the batteries in your smoke and CO alarms. It is the law in Ontario that everyone has a working smoke alarm on every floor and a functioning CO alarm.
