Six MPPs are driving from Toronto to Manitoba this week to highlight the dangers of highways 11 and 17. Among them, Mushkegowuk-James Bay MPP Guy Bourgouin, Nickel Belt MPP France Gelinas, and Sudbury MPP Jamie West. Along the way, they’ll be stopping in North Bay, Kapuskasing, Timmins, Thunder Bay, Kenora, Sudbury, and Sault Ste. Marie.

The City of has hired 31 volunteer firefighters last year, three of whom resigned before starting certification training, leaving 28 recruits to proceed. This, according to a report tabled March 2 in advance of the March 10 city council meeting at which it’s slated to be discussed.

Eight young leaders from across various communities and urban areas have been named to a historic new body – The Robinson Huron Treaty Youth Advisory. Organizers have called it a milestone in strengthening connections, culture and leadership among Anishinaabek youth.

With overnight temperatures expected to drop, the area has issued an extreme cold weather alert. The mercury’s expected to drop overnight to -28 C with the windchill. The advisories are put out when the weather is expected to drop below -20 C, including windchill.

Collision numbers are being looked in the city involving drivers. In January there were roughly 360 collisions according to Police. Baring any duplication in reports, that’s only slightly lower than the worst month for crashes in the last decade, which was 381 collisions in January 2025.

More assistance is coming to those attempting to make a difference in Northern Ontario. The Temiskaming Foundation’s grant program continues to assist not-for-profit groups and municipalities in the region. Support can range from program and project funding to material purchases.
