Downtown the focus with spending

The downtown core is getting priority, when it comes to funding requests. That’s according to the City of Sudbury this week. They say that with $600,000 to spend and more than $2 million in funding requests, the city’s finance committee has decided to focus on its Downtown Sudbury Community Improvement Plan. The hope is that budget will focus on areas expected to have the biggest impact.
 

Driving too fast, the #1 cause of collisions

There’s good news and there’s bad news for Sudbury Drivers today… depending on how you look at it. OPP say that during the month of January, accidents involving alcohol were down to one. 62 accidents however were blamed on driving too fast for the road conditions. Is the number one cause of winter collisions. Police say that a defensive driving style is critical.
 

Sledder in hospital following crash

A 50-year-old North Bay snowmobiler is in serious condition in hospital today after his sled collided wit a tree. Reports say the accident happened on a registered trail in the Township of Phelps northeast of North Bay this week. The incident is still under investigation.
 

Stars and Thunder will have full fencing

As soon as the snow melts, Timmins City Council says that work will begin to plan out a full fencing grid for the stars and Thunder Festival. In other words, the entire public area of the park will be fenced off as a construction zone. Complaints regarding alcohol just outside fenced areas last year, lead to significant complaints, especially are the Cenotaph.

Angus slated to release National action plan re: suicide

Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus will says he’s slated to release details of a national action plan on suicide today at the Mushkegowuk Tribal Council Emergency summit. Angus says that he has put together a national action plan in response to calls from regional leadership. Angus says the federal government needs to get serious in facing the urgency of the suicide crisis in Canada.
