Clean up continues, hundreds still without power

The clean up continues in Greater Sudbury Today, following a storm environment Canada is calling a downburst. As of last night, number of customers without power had been brought down to roughly 450. Greater Sudbury Hydro says they’re hoping that most customers will have power in the next day or two.
Areas still without electricity Wednesday morning: Kingston, Kipling, Montrose (including Montrose mall, a priority for the morning)
Wedgewood, Abigail, Beaumont, Lauzon, Shelly, Dorchester and parts of, Moss, Grandview, and Agincourt.
There are many other customers in various areas who have damage to their electrical service masts. Those homeowners must get a licensed electrician to repair that mast and must have ESA ( Electrical Safety Authority) authorize a re-connection.
 

Suspects wanted in theft from vehicle, mischief

Crime Stoppers and the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are looking for the public’s help in solving a mischief and theft. They say it happened at an Echo Bay residence, where a white Ford Escape was parked. The suspects entered the vehicle by breaking the front passenger window. The suspects then entered the vehicle and removed several items including 500 dollars in cash and a status card. Anyone with information is asked to contact Police.
 

Red light cameras revisited for Greater Sudbury

Drivers may think twice before trying to the red, at least at a few intersections in Greater Sudbury. This week, members of the city’s finance committee gave staff approval to begin planning for red light cameras. If everything goes to plan, the new technology pegged at $500,000 a year, would be installed in 2019. Paris Street at Cedar Street, Regent Street at Algonquin Road and Municipal Road 80 at Dominion Drive would be the first to get cameras.
 

More help coming to fight forest fires

The cavalry is on the way when it comes to Forest Fires in Ontario. Alberta, BC and Saskatchewan are all sending to help battle the forest fire concern in Ontario. The MNRF says, fifteen three-person crews from British Columbia and ten four-person crews from Alberta will be deployed are being deployed to various fires. There are 69 active forest fires in Northeast Region, 27 of those are not yet under control.
 

Stars and Thunder comes up in a deficit

The lights have gone down, and now the numbers are coming up for the Stars and Thunder Festival in Timmins… and there is a deficit. Roughly $1.89-million dollars in a shortfall. A preliminary report was brought to city council this week. CAO Dave Landers says it’s too early to have any firm final numbers. Mayor Steve Black says the will be covered through some of the city’s reserves and not by tax payers.
 

Seniors getting support when it comes to fire safety

Sault Ste. Marie seniors can are getting house calls, upon request that is, from city fire departments. It’s all in a new program to help them reduce fire risk. This week, personnel from Project Assisting Seniors Awareness Program, says the group is out checking fire alarms, identify potential fire hazards and to help with a fire escape plan.
