Fire alarms set off at Greater Sudbury theatre

Some in Sudbury out for a movie were exposed to a little real-life action Sunday. It’s still not known why but at one-point alarms were sounded, and people were forced to evacuate just before fire trucks arrived at the scene. There were no reported injuries, and the matter is under investigation.
 

Flood prevention work underway in North Bay

The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority is now beginning preliminary work, as Lake Nipissing continues to rise. Personnel were at the Eva Wardlaw Conservation Area dropping the steel beams into the flood control structure as a flood warning continues. The lake has been rising an average of 10 cm a day.
 

Residents around Gogama advised of flooding risk

Residents in and around the Gogama area being advised of the risk of flooding. The Timmins district Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry issued a statement Sunday afternoon that a Flood Watch is in effect for the area. The low-pressure system that moved through the province on Thursday and Friday resulted in approximately 20 to 25 mm of rainfall in the Timmins/Gogama areas.
 

Door ripped off hinges in a break-in

Sault Ste Marie Police have taken two into custody following a wild break, enter and theft. It happened Tancred Street when a chain attached to a vehicle ripped off a door at a business in the 100 block of Tancred Street. Once inside $430 worth of product was taken. Damage to the door is estimated at $5,600. A man and women were arrested after attempting to flee from Police.
 

Highway reopens following flooding

Highway 17 re-opened to all traffic just before the weekend, but the work is not yet done. The MTO says a short section of gravel roadway has been placed over top a new culvert. Permanent paving will take place in the next few weeks. The highway was closed for several days at Bissett Creek after the shoulders and embankments on either side of the highway were washed out.
 

Sudbury will consider Convention Centre Proposal

Sudbury mayor Brian Bigger says that the city will consider new a convention centre proposal. The controversial Kingsway Entertainment District is still tied up in appeals, but last week developer Dario Zulich announced his pitch to expand the KED to include the city’s convention centre. The convention centre is currently part of The Junction – which also includes an art gallery and library, slated for the site of the current Sudbury arena.
