One new case of Covid-19 in Hearst

The Porcupine Health Unit is reporting one new COVID-19 case among residents in the local health unit area. It is in a nursing Home in Hearst. The staff member tested positive but did not show any symptoms. That individual is now self-isolating.
 

25-year-old deceased after a cliff jump

Ontario Provincial Police say a 25-year-old man has died after he and two other people went cliff diving in the French River on Saturday.  They say the incident happened at about 5:30 p.m. when three people jumped off a 10-metre rock face into the water.  Police say the first two people were fine, but the third man was unconscious when he resurfaced.  They say he was taken to the mainland and then airlifted to hospital and pronounced dead.  He’s been identified as a male from Udora, Ont. Police say foul play is not suspected and the chief coroner is investigating.
 

Callander resident looking for a lost pony

A Callander woman is looking for a family animal. Cider, a recently adopted pony from a rescue operation in Hagarsvillle, was last seen on July 30. There is a concern due to local predators and anyone who sees the young horse, possibly near the Watson Road are should call Police.
 

Reopening delayed, due to COVID-19 increase

The city of Greater Sudbury says, due to the recent increase in COVID-19 cases, they’ve postponed the reopening of some municipal facilities by two weeks. The health unit says some 22 cases within recent weeks were caused by travel or contact with a close case, but several have unknown exposures which suggest community spread.
 

No serious injuries following float plane crash

Thankfully, there were no serious injuries in a float plane crash on Upper Island Lake. Sault Ste. Marie OPP responded. Upon police arrival, both the pilot and the lone passenger of the aircraft had been brought to safety by local residents. Both parties were assessed by Algoma EMS on the scene and found to have sustained only minor injuries as a result of the crash.
 

Look out into mine closed for 2020

The reopening of the lookout into the active open-pit mine in Timmins is on hold. Last fall Newmont Porcupine opened the Hollinger Open Pit Lookout for a limited time, attracting hundreds of people on opening day… but now with the ongoing pandemic, an announced closure will extend until the end of the year.

Overdue Jet Skiier pulled in by coast guard

An overdue jet skier has bee located and rescued by Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City Station in the Sault Ste. Marie area. It happened Saturday night, shortly before 10 p.m. The boater had departed Drummond Island earlier in the evening and not returned as planned.
