COVID-19 testing to being in area schools next week

The province of Ontario is aiming to start asymptomatic COVID-19 surveillance testing in area schools next week. It will require parental or guardian approval with a start date of Monday Feb. 22. Minister of Education Stephen Lecce made the announcement through a memo this week. Testing began this week in the GTA regions.
 

Police seeking information, driver of stolen vehicle

Sudbury and West Nipissing OPP are seeking tips from the public after locating a stolen vehicle. After being reported out of Manitoba, it was found in the eastbound lane of Highway 17 near the off-ramp to Lively. Police are asking the public if they assisted or observed anyone in connection with the vehicle.
 

Multiple suspects and multiple charges following search warrant

Four men are facing various charges after a Police search of a Callander home. Once inside, narcotics, two stolen bicycles and weapons including a high-powered fire arm was located. Those facing charges are between 36 and 55 years of age. They will be in court next month.
 

Long term care home pushed back against outbreak

EXTENDICARE KAPUSKASING, the site of an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, are reporting no new cases of the Corona Virus once again. While two residents have actives cases, all residents continue to isolate in their rooms, where they are being provided with meals and individual care and support.
 

Nip U & Canadore to receiving over $300 each for mental health

Nipissing University and Canadore College will both receive funding for mental health programming for students. It was announced by MPP Vic Fedeli via Zoom this week. Nipissing University will receive just over $326k for its mental health supports, while $321k is headed to Canadore.
 

Indi Cinema opens this week once again

The Sudbury Indie Cinema says it’s back on the big screen following the loosening of COVID-19 restrictions. The region’s only art house cinema opened its doors to in-theatre screenings Feb. 16 for the first time since Dec. 22. The cinema moved into virtual screenings mid-January either.

Snow depth increases by 11.2 cm in North Bay, Mattawa

Despite the cold, the recent snow dump in North Bay and area has once again pushed for an increase in snow depth. 11.2 cm. That’s according to the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority who add the average water content has increased by 1 mm since the last snow survey. It’s all measured as part of its Flood Forecasting and Warning Program.
 

Another travel advisory in place for Highway 17 North

Another heads up is being issued for those heading North out of Sault Ste Marie today. snow squalls could develop later this morning and continue until Friday morning along highway 17-North between Marathon and Wawa. The snow squalls should move east of the region by late Friday morning.
