Two Health Unit areas move into the Red today
The Health until area for Public Health Sudbury and Districts has officially moved into the red, or control zone, as has the catchment area for North Bay-Parry Sound. Among the other regions in the Health Unit area, Timiskaming drops into the orange level from green.
Two more schools in Greater Sudbury closed due to COVID-19
Walden Public School has been closed up to and including March 12. All classes for in-person learners will be delivered remotely. The board is currently assessing the impact of another confirmed case of COVID-19 at the school. Is is being considered as a possible variant of concern.
Meanwhile, Collège Notre-Dame closed until March 19th. Due to the declaration of a second COVID-19 case at the school. Grade 9 to 12 students from Collège Notre-Dame will be able to continue learning from home in a virtual format. For more residents can contact the school board.
Elsewhere, another case of COVID-19 was reported at Pius XII Catholic Elementary School. The Grade 2-3 class at Pius XII has been dismissed until March 17th. Public Health Sudbury & Districts is working with the school. Parents, guardians and students have all been notified.
COVID-19 testing increasing at LTC home
Cassellholme in North Bay is ramping up testing. The hope it to take it from 500 tests per week to between 1,500 and 1,800. The plan comes after the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit announced Friday that an outbreak declared at the long-term care home last month had ended.
OPP out and monitoring trails
Snow mobile trails everywhere are open, and thus the OPP are firing up their engines as well. A release from the Almaguin Highlands OPP Detachment will be patrolling the local snowmobile trails along with roadways to ensure snowmobilers are following the rules. Officers will focus their patrol on snowmobilers driving illegally on sidewalks in the surrounding communities along with other offences.
Fire causes $300k in damages to home
The damages to a house in the Connaught Hill area of South Porcupine are now said to be in the $300,000 range. The home was severely damaged by fire just before the weekend. It happened in the 100-block of Dunn Avenue. The home was under renovation at the time, but no one was believed to be at home, at the time.
Ski hill opens this week following “Stay at home order”
Laurentian Ski Hill in North Bay opens this week. The province ordered all downhill facilities in Ontario closed last year and Laurentian continued to be closed during the stay-at-home order locally. The Hill will be open Tuesday for season pass holders only and beginning Wednesday to the general public.

Appeal over apartment building turned down by LAPT
Those opposed to the MacDonald Avenue apartment tower, in Sault Ste Marie have lost a final appeal. The eight-story apartment building proposed on former Sault Collegiate Institute playing fields at 22 MacDonald Ave. SCI across the street was demolished in 2001 to make room for Chartwell Collegiate Heights Retirement Residence.
Sudbury Police looking into Laser Aircraft complaint
Greater Sudbury Police say they are investigating incidents involving lasers and aircraft. It happened near the airport, just before midnight Friday. A green flashing laser had allegedly been pointed at an aircraft initiating their departure from the airport. Those involved in such an act can face a $1,000 fine or even jail time.
