Ontario Government says school reopening should be safe

The Ontario Government says regular testing combined with high levels of COVID-19 vaccination among staff and eligible students should keep Ontario schools safe when they open next month. Dr. Kieran Moore spoke yesterday. He indicates schools will be monitored in the coming weeks to see if higher rates of vaccination are required among staff, for whom immunization against COVID-19 isn’t mandatory.
 

VALE reports fatality at a Copper Cliff site

An individual has died away while working for an external contractor at a Vale Processing facility in Copper Cliff. It happened yesterday. A press release from Vale indicates the cause of death is unknown at this time and adds the first priority is ensuring the safety of those attending the scene and supporting the family of the individual.
 

West Nipissing council seat will remain empty, for now

A West Nipissing vacant council seat will remain empty. It’s been over a year since a representative from Ward 7—or Verner—Jeremy Seguin gave his resignation. In short, the council was unable to decide on how to go about filling the seat. In their latest vote, a consensus could not be reached, with votes resulting in a 4-4 deadlock. The next municipal election is in November 2022.
 

South Porcupine OPP investigating a highway 144 complaint

South Porcupine OPP is investigating a traffic complaint on Highway 144. It occurred on Aug. 21 at approximately 7 p.m. near Mattagami First Nation Road. The incident involved a blue Mazda SUV was travelling northbound on Highway 144 and being operated by what was reported to be a male driver. Anyone with more information is asked to call the police.
 

Construction of Finn Hill should be complete next month

Construction of Finn Hill mountain bike trail in Sault Ste Marie can begin next month. This is after the Sault Cycling Club has raised $94,000 of its $150,000 goal. The Finn Hill Mountain Bike Trail will be a 3-km flow trail for off-road cycling. It will use the natural contours of Finn Hill, adjacent to the Hub Trail, the P-Patch neighbourhood and Northern Avenue.
 

Hydro one asking for new $17-billion dollar investment

Hydro One is asking the Ontario Energy Board to approve a five-year, $17-billion investment plan. All to upgrade the electrical system across the province. In Timmins, that means dealing with an ageing system, climate change and the challenging economy. The results of the application will be the improvement of reliability on the distribution side by 25%, and building a grid that will support economic growth and modernize the grid.
 

Sault Ste Marie man facing break and enter charges

A Sault Ste Marie man is facing break and enter charges. Police responded to a call around 4 p.m. yesterday afternoon in regards to a residence in a multi-unit building in the 300 block of Albert St E. had been entered. Upon investigation, police say they determined that the residence had been entered sometime between Aug. 20 and Aug. 23 and that property had been damaged and taken. A 39-year-old has located arrested and charged.
