HSN gives an update on their COVID-19 numbers
Public Health Sudbury and Districts reported seven new cases of COVID-19 yesterday and one new workplace outbreak. It involves CP workers. Overall, HSN says that as of August 30th there were four patients with confirmed COVID-19 at the hospital, two of which are in the ICU.
OPP lay arm’s length of charges following a showdown with Police
OPP has laid charges on a Toronto man following a run-in with police. It happened on Highway 654 in Nipissing Township. A caller reported a vehicle had been stolen and when a traffic stop was initiated, the driver fled from Police. They then collided with a stopped cruiser with its lights flashing. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the 32-year-old driver was held for a bail hearing.
Callander’s water is getting flushed
The town of Callander is flushing the entire drinking water distribution system within the municipality. They’ve teamed up with the Ontario Clean Water Agency to do the work. The work has already begun and carries on until Friday, September 10, between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. During this process, the municipality warns that some residents may encounter discolored water. Rust or sedimentation may also be visible in water throughout the week. That said the water has been properly disinfected and is safe for consumption.
The PHU puts out a workplace vaccine policy tool kit
Public Health Sudbury and Districts has posted a Workplace Vaccine Policy Toolkit on its website. The goal is to educate employers and encourage employers in the region implement COVID-19 vaccination policies to protect their staff. The toolkit includes a policy template and educational materials such as videos, posters, and fact sheets.
1920’s Fire truck getting restored
The Ontario government is shelling out nearly $11,000 ($10,950) to the North Bay Museum for the restoration of a 1920s fire engine. Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli’s office made the announcement yesterday. The funding is coming in from the Ontario Rural Economic Development program, and will go to restore a Bickle Fire Engine that was donated to the museum.
SAH announces a new board of directors, CEO
Sault Area Hospital’s board of directors has appointed a new president and chief executive officer. Ila Watson assumes the role, effective immediately. Watson joined SAH in 2009 as Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer. Watson also served SAH as the Interim President and CEO during 2018-19.
PHU announces a new COVID-19 advisory
The porcupine health unit has put out a possible COVID-19 exposure advisory. It is for an Air Canada flight from Toronto to Timmins. The PHU says those on the 7:50 am flight last Thursday, August 26th in rows 6 – 10 should consider themselves high risk. Anyone else on board is advised to self-monitor for symptoms for ten days.
One firefighter treated following house fire in Greater Subury
Sudbury firefighter were called to a house fire on Velma Street in the Val Therese area of the city yesterday. The call came in at around 9:30 a.m. after smoke was seen billowing from the roof of a single-family home. The occupants were not home at the time. There is no word of the cause nor the total damage done. That said, due to the hot and humid weather conditions, one firefighter did require medical attention from on-scene paramedics.
