LU insolvency has now cost $9.8 million

Laurentian University insolvency, has now cost the school, to date, $9.8 million dollars.  That’s from president Robert Haché who spoke at a recent meeting of the Laurentian University senate. That said, Laurentian has freed up funds as a result of the restructuring — reducing the operating base of the university by $40 million a year, or 25 percent.
 

City Council will consider $7.17 worth of spending in 2022

Greater Sudbury’s finance committee will consider $7.17 million in new spending. A combination of city council, and staff-directed initiatives it’s all being looked at for the 2022 budget.  One of the projects being proposed is a garage at Lionel E. Lalonde Centre to relocate some vehicles from the main ambulance garage space at a proposed cost of $370,000, plus an annual operating cost to maintain the structure of $25,000.
 

3 vehicles tied up in mid-day collision

Thankfully, only minor injuries were reported after a three-vehicle accident over the lunch hour in North Bay yesterday. It happened in the 600 block of Lakeshore Drive. The accident involved one car and two vans, one of which belongs to the Humane Society. There were no animal injuries. Anyone with dashcam footage is asked to call the police.
 

Burning rules revisited for residents

While there are no new Forest Fires in the North East, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services are reminding everyone about the rules regarding outdoor burning. Those who do burn, are required to follow Ontario’s outdoor burning regulations. Fires are to be ignited no sooner than 2 hours before sunset and extinguished no later than 2 hours after sunrise.  They must be adequate to contain the fire at the site.
 

George Perie running for PC Party

The Ontario PC Party has announced that Timmins Mayor, George Pirie, has been nominated as PC party candidate for the riding of Timmins for the 2022 provincial election. The seat has been held by NDP Gilles Bisson since 1990.
 

Survey put out for residents over COVID-19 effects

The City of Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma Workforce Investment Corporation (AWIC) have put out a survey. It’s all to better understand the impact of COVID-19 following a year and a half of impact on local businesses and organizations during and beyond the COVID-19 crisis.  The October survey will be available until October 31, 2021, and can be accessed by reaching out to the city.
 

Algoma Steel puts out emissions memo

Algoma Steel has put out a memo to the public regarding safety training exercises. They will be running today through to Friday, using the safe handling of desulphurizing reagents used in the steelmaking process. It will happen for approximately 2-3 hours on the northwest section of Algoma Steel property. The training will involve the controlled ignition and extinguishment of reagent product samples which may result in visible emissions.
 

Protest brings out roughly a dozen protestors

Roughly a dozen protesters gathered outside Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli’s constituency office yesterday, to express their concern over long-term care in Ontario. One of the concerns? Staffing. The North Bay & District Labour Council was behind the event, one of a number of similar events in the Province. It coincided with the return of MPPs to Queen’s Park.
