Operator being sought for KED
The city of Greater Sudbury says they’re now looking for an operator for the new events centre, planned for the KED. The municipality is seeking an experienced firm that can provide input into the centre’s design. Additionally, the company will be expected to “maximize revenue; minimize operating costs; increase venue programming, and work toward meeting the city’s goals as outlined in the community energy and emissions plan.”
Local resident hopes to resurrect lighthouse
A local Callander resident is hoping to revive a local landmark. A lighthouse for Morrison Island. The island can be seen from Memory Tree Park and from the municipal dock at the end of Lansdowne Street. Once there, the structure stood for about 25 years before a devastating storm in July 2006. If it goes up it will stand 40 feet high and be fully operational, warning boaters and snowmobilers of the island.
New cameras going up in the city of Timmins
Timmins Police Service has installed five new surveillance cameras in the city. Splitting the costs with the Province, it brings its complement to more than two dozen city-wide. They are not monitored, but recordings are kept for two weeks. Police say video is heavily used for both criminal and traffic investigations.
Power knocked out early in Sault Ste Marie, west of Townline
The power was knocked out for a number of Sault Ste Marie residents west of Townline. There is no word as to the cause, but anyone without power this morning should contact the PUC.
HSN set deadline for vaccines
Health Sciences North employees are being told, if they’re not vaccinated by November 12th, with at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, they will be put on leave without pay or be suspended. The hospital’s updated vaccination policy will also apply to employees who are working from home. Only those with a documented medical exemption for a COVID-19 vaccine that is recognized by the hospital’s occupational health and safety department will be exempt.
North Bay Police take one into custody for break and enter
Members of the North Bay Police have arrested and charged a man with break and enter. It happened on First Avenue during the early morning hours of Saturday. Once confronted by the residents, the accused left the residence at which point Police were contacted. The 22-year-old suspect was located a short distance away and arrested.
Boil water advisory lifted in Elliot Lake Trailer Park
A boil water advisory issued by Algoma Public Health has been lifted. It was for the Westhill Trailer Park in Elliot Lake. This is after higher than acceptable bacteriological lab results were detected. Additional work and tests have cleared the advisory.
New shelter in New Liskeard moves closer to opening day
A new shelter in New Liskeard is moving closer to opening day. The public had a chance to see plans for the new shelter at an event at the location over the weekend. The facility will provide safe beds for the night for up to 10 people. The hope is that it will be open by January 1.
Another record fire season says MNRF
Forest fire season in Ontario has come to an end. The MNRF says than 1,200 fires across the province were fought this year with the help of other national and international partners. Severe drought and dry weather conditions that began in July led to a record number of fires, including a 200,000-hectare fire – one of the largest in Ontario’s history. In response, the province issued an emergency order for northwestern Ontario and called upon fire crews from the United States, Mexico, and even Australia for assistance.
