One person associated with Pinewood Public School in SSM tests positive with COVID-19

A person associated with Pinewood Public School in Sault Ste Marie has tested positive for COVID-19. The board confirmed the news in a release issued yesterday. Algoma Public Health has issued letters to those considered low-risk and high-risk contacts.
 

Input sought on Sudbury Community Arena repurposing

The public’s input to be sought on the Sudbury Community Arena. Specifically, on its repurposing. While the Kingsway Entertainment District’s grand opening is still three years away, Greater Sudbury city council wants to get going on repurposing the existing downtown location. During this week’s meeting, city officials voted in favour of the move.
 

Demo of West Nipissing bridge starts today

The Demolition of the West Nipissing bridge is scheduled for today. The Nature’s Trail Bridge replacement will move ahead starting now, and carry on until mid-January. The roadway itself is a one-lane road brushed and graded by the municipality about once a year.
 

Kirkland Lake OPP lay charges in the theft of a dirt-bike

Kirkland Lake OPP has laid charges in a theft investigation of a dirt bike. Stolen from a residence on Hudson Bay Avenue, Police executed a search warrant at a residence on the same street and recovered the stolen dirt bike. A 30 year of age, of Kirkland Lake, has been arrested and charged.
 

Sault Ste Marie’s unemployment higher than the Provincial and National average

Sault Ste. Marie’s unemployment rate has edged up, now higher than the provincial, and national average. The highest unemployment rate can be attributed to those ages 15 to 24. In Sault Ste. Marie that unemployment is marked at 12.5 percent, higher than Canada’s 10.2 percent of Ontario’s 9.9 percent.
 

Section of Mountain Steet reopened following Police response

Greater Sudbury Police say a section of Mountain Street between St. Joseph and Mont Adam has reopened after being as officers responded to “an incident”. Members of the tactical unit were present and EMS was onsite. Shortly after 6 p.m., police tweeted that the incident had been resolved and the street was re-opened but gave no other details.
 

Canadore College opens up Entrepreneurship Academy

Canadore College is starting Canada’s first-ever Entrepreneurship Academy. The Academy will offer hands-on, practical training and offer students the opportunity to join with existing business owners and investors who will coach and mentor students.  The college says the Academy is positioned to revolutionize and transform learning experiences and to be responsive to new ways of leading, thinking and learning through environmental and technological disruption.
 

East Algoma investigating a fatal fire

East Algoma OPP was called to a fire inside a vacant building on Lisbon Road in Elliot Lake. The Elliot Lake Fire Department attended to ensure the fire was extinguished. There is some suspicion the fire was intentionally lit. The known person(s) then, allegedly vacated the property prior to the arrival of emergency services.
