Property owners will find out the impacts of the budget come the Spring

City of Greater Sudbury’s budget deliberations for 2022 may have ended last week with a 3.1-per-cent increase to the tax levy, but there won’t be any word as to direct impact to property until the new year. The city establishes its 2022 property tax policy in April or May. The hope was the city would keep the overall tax levy increase capped at 3%.
 

Four cases of COVID-19 confirmed at LU

Four cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed on the Laurentian University campus. The school made the announcement yesterday. It happened during a meeting of the board of governors. They do few students currently self-isolating on campus.
 

Adanac Ski Hill open, with restrictions in place

The Adanac Ski Hill is open in Greater Sudbury, but walk-ins are being turned away. Skiers are asked to self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms before visiting the hill and to avoid the facility if experiencing symptoms. Because of the pandemic, all visits must be pre-booked and pre-paid. Day tickets and walk-in lessons are not available.
 

DSSAB approves a 3.84% increase

DSSAB in North Bay (The District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board) is projecting a $1.6-million budget surplus from 2021. That said, this week the board approved a 3.84 percent levy increase for the coming year. DSSAB says there has been no increase in funding for Ontario Works to help offset salaries and benefits that have seen increases. There are also extra expenses during the transfer of emergency medical service operations.
 

Good Happenings Food Bank moving ahead with renovations

The Good Happenings Food Bank in South River is moving ahead with renovations. This is all thanks to a significant contribution of $10,000 from town Council. The money will be used for capital works. The food bank is relocating to the former Chalmers United Church, once new lighting and the wiring are installed to accommodate the food bank’s freezers.
 

Stay off the ICE

The North Bay Fire Department is urging residents to stay off the ice. While it’s cold this morning, with the mild conditions in the region as of late, the ice thickness on area waterways has not developed to a point where residents should be out on the lake for a walk, ski, or skate.
 

Edmonton Man caught speeding through Latchford

An Edmonton man is facing a number of dangerous driving charges. This is after passing an emergency response vehicle with its emergency lights activated on Highway 11 near Temagami. Temiskaming OPP responded to a traffic complaint and spoke to the driver. When it was stopped the driver was allegedly travelling in excess of 150 kilometres per hour in a posted 90 km/h zone.
 

North Bay suspected wanted for slashing tires

The North Bay Police Service is looking for a suspect, wanted for mischief. This is after someone allegedly damaged vehicles on Nancy Drive, Ursula Street and Justin Street on Sunday, Dec. 19. The incidents are believed to have taken place between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.
 

Omicron Variant confirmed in the THU area

The Omicron COVID-19 variant has been confirmed in the Timiskaming Health Unit region. As of 1 p.m. yesterday, four people have tested positive for the variant that is now the dominant strain in the province. Residents are being urged to follow health guidelines. The north part of the region is the Kirkland Lake area. The neighbouring Porcupine Health Unit also confirmed positive screens for the variant. No further information has been released.
 

Living Space in Timmins to continue, despite the departure of Executive Director

Living Space in Timmins will continue uninterrupted, despite the departure of it executive director Jason Sereda. He has been in the position since February of 2019. He announced on Tuesday he is leaving the organization.
 

Skating path at Hollinger Park ready for a new season

The skate path at Hollinger Park is ready for a new season. The Timmins Community Park Association confirms that it’s open. The TCPA trailer will be open from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Covid rules do apply in order to come into the trailer to change or borrow skates. Those interested will need to show proof of double vaccination.
