The Ministry of Colleges and Universities of Ontario and the Government of Canada are combining efforts to support the growth of Francophone and bilingual education at Laurentian University. The move comes a funding boost of just over $5 million.

A missing youth from Sault Ste Marie was located safe and sound Saturday. Ruby Kerr. Grade 6 Northern Ontario student was missing for more than 24 hours before being found safe Saturday afternoon by an OPP helicopter and reunited with her family.

The University of Sudbury has reopened is residence, plans to become standalone institution with a list of renovations planned in the coming months.

It’s wild fire season, and an active forest fire has been called in, measuring roughly the size of a football field. Timmins 1 is 1.2 hectares and is currently being held.

Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli has announced $3.8 million in support of eight local businesses. All done through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, and augmented by money from the businesses themselves, the funding will help create 74 full-time jobs in the region.

A number of road projects are commencing this week in Greater Sudbury. The short term results is that it will impact traffic in the city. Amongst the jobs, Sidewalk, landscaping, and paving work will reduce traffic to one lane on Hyland Drive from Regent Street to Winchester Avenue from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and tomorrow.

The Municipality of Callander is making improvements to the Bill Barber Rink, having recently awarded the contract for just north of $540,000 ($545,485.10) plus GST.

One active wildfire continues to burn in the Northeast Region. Timmins District fire No. 1 measures b at 1.2 hectares and is now under control.

Meanwhile, with nicer weather in the forecast, open-air burning permits are now available in Sault Ste Marie. The renewal of previous permits, as well as getting a new one, can be done online through Sault Ste. Marie Fire Service.
