Two new wildfires were confirmed in the Northeast Region by early evening on Thursday, both in the Sudbury district. Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services said Sudbury 31 (SUD031) is on an island on the east side of Wanapitei Lake. It is 0.1 hectares and is being held.

Clean, Green, Beautiful North Bay has distributed 3,300 clean-up bags this year. The Fall Community-Wide Cleanup kick-off event is Sept. 5 at 10:30 a.m. at Memorial Gardens.

The Porcupine Health Unit and Timiskaming Health Unit are merging and to that end, a short survey has been launched to gather feedback that will help shape the new health unit’s identity.

In Sault Ste Marie, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a brief appearance at city’s Transit Facility Thursday afternoon to talk transit and electric arc steelmaking investments with the mayor and local MP. In March, almost $7.8 million in federal and provincial funding was announced for Sault Transit to improve transit infrastructure in the Sault, including the purchase of two electric buses and an electric charging station.

In Elliot Lake, the Sidewalk closure on Hillside Drive North between the Fire Dept. and Hutchison Trail continues today. The trail connecting Hutchison and Hillside Dr. North will also be closed during this time.

Greater Sudbury Hydro says the power is back on following an outage this morning. It happened in the South End affecting the Loach’s Road/Windle Drive area. Customers reported that it followed a loud bang. Once again, the power is back on with no word as to the initial cause of the outage.

West Nipissing residents, are being reminded to be bear wise while at the landfill. They say it never hurts to double-check those mirrors to ensure ether the coast is clear, and not to panic should you see a bruin, but return quietly to the vehicle.

Timmins City officials working on plan to alleviate housing crisis. Mayor Michelle Boileau listens as Chief Administrative Officer Dave Landers have delivered an update on the City of Timmins’ Housing Action Plan during a recent council meeting. A combination of high prices and low availability is making it difficult for many local families to find a home in the community.
