Greater Sudbury Hydro says it’s not only illegal, but there’s an increased concern for public safety after tracking an increase in the theft of wire from hydro poles throughout the city. There have been 80 incidents since November 2024… and theirs is a concern.
From the good news file, another handful of outdoor rinks have opened in North Bay. Nine are now open including Police Playground, Massey Rink at West Ferris Lions Park, Graniteville Playground, and parts of the Lee Park skating trail.

Northern College in Timmins says changes to international student study permit eligibility and post graduate work permit eligibility has forced them to lay off staff. Earlier this month, Immigration Minister Mark Miller announced a 35 per cent cut to the number of International student visas issued.

There were thankfully no serious injuries after a driver wound up causing a two-vehicle collision that left one vehicle hung up on a snowbank this week in the Sault. It happened in the 700 block of Pine St.

The Federal Government has pledged $281K to Kivi Park in Greater Sudbury for bike trails and a senior’s program. When the time comes, Kivi Park’s 18 existing kilometers of bike trails will be renovated and three kilometers of connecting segments are being added.

Meanwhile support is growing for the Trout Creek Community Centre as part of this year’s Kraft Hockeyville competition. The community has been nominated and is now in the rally phase of the annual contest of which Elliot Lake won in 2025.

Timmins city council politicians will be getting down to business a little earlier than usual this evening. Timmins council meetings will now start at 5:30 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. In short, in the last part of 2024, many meetings were more than three hours, with some lasting over four hours.

Nominations are now open for the annual Athena Leadership Award in Sault Ste Marie. “The annual award is presented to an individual who is recognized for their professional excellence, for providing valuable service to their community, and for actively assisting women in the attainment of their professional goals and leadership skills.

The 2025 Cochrane Winter Carnival, Ontario’s oldest winter festival, will run in the middle of next month. Feb. 8-17 will be packed schedule of events and activities throughout the two-week celebration.

The Town of Gore Bay officially swore in its two new councillors at a meeting held last week. Taryn Strain and Dan Forest were sworn in as the new members of council. This is the first time in recent memory that two councillors sworn in at the same time.
