Laurentian profs have ratified a new deal, ending a three-week strike at the university. While the union says there are still concerns, over pensions, salaries and workload, they are calling the new agreement ‘small step toward fairness’.

Callander township continues to have two vacant seats at the municipal level. Former Mayor Robb Noon resigned on December 20, 2025, along with Councilor Irene Smit, who also resigned on that day. Applications close on Tuesday, February 17 at 2 p.m.

More snow and a new location are in the plans for this year’s snow cross championship event in Timmins. The 2026 event taking place March 7 and 8th. While Hollinger Park has been a great home in previous years, the new location is at Blackfield Topsoil on Airport.

City staff is working to provide new accessible washrooms at the Esposito Park and Outdoor Rink at Queen Street West and Andrew Street. They are working with the engineering firm to do a redesign. So far, they’ve been able to repurpose the existing concrete pad.

Winterfest 2026 is being called by many a success, with several events running throughout the city. It started just ahead of the weekend and brought with it several returning favourite and new experiences. The community is being thanked for their participation!

City council will continue to investigate after receiving some pushback on the proposed location of an expanded new women’s shelter in Haileybury. Almost a dozen people turned out to council’s January 21 meeting to express their opinions on the proposal.
