Terry Fox run happens this weekend

This city of Timmins raised a Terry Fox Flag at city hall this week. This Sunday is the 40th-annual Terry Fox run and is being held as a virtual event. This year’s theme is “One Day, Your Way” where residents can run on their own routes, all in support of cancer research.
 

2 new cases of COVID-19 in out of mining operation

An outbreak of COVID-19 has been declared at Glencore’s Kidd Operations Mine Site. Two employees have tested positive for COVID-19. An investigation has revealed that these cases are related. The employees are currently self-isolating at home.
 

New lights more than half-way up

Greater Sudbury is now two-thirds of the way through a project to convert streetlights. Going from old school bulbs, to more-efficient LED technology. 7,200 lights done so far out of just under 11,000. The expectation that the entire switchover will be complete by November. It is expected to have monetary savings of approximately $1 million dollars or 41 percent over the previous lights.
 

Degagne takes a new job with Indspire

Former Nipissing University President Mike Degagne has resigned as president of Yukon University after just two months. The former president of Nipissing University has taken a job as president of Indspire Canada’s largest Indigenous-led and Indigenous-focused charity.
 

Final LPAT decision pending

Ontario’s Local Planning Appeals Tribunal (LPAT) reconvened on the Kingsway Entertainment District for final oral arguments on all issues yesterday. This is as the City of Greater Sudbury was again defending its process in approving and advancing plans with the KED. A second day, Sept. 18, was reserved, but it will not be needed, as submissions wrapped up yesterday. A verdict has not been given.
 

Regreening efforts happen in October

In Greater Sudbury, the Junction Creek Stewardship Committee is now ramping up regreening efforts, in planting to plant trees and shrubs along Junction Creek. New COVID-19 safety protocols will be in place as all participants must pre-register for the initiative, spouting up early October. Despite the pandemic, those with the planting project hope their numbers will grow.

City council approves snow-removal

North Bay City Council has approved a two-year contract to clear the roof over the West Ferris Arena’s dressing rooms come winter. Council awarded the nearly $103,000 contract this week, noting it was the lowest-bidder after a request-for-quote process. The City has the option to extend the contract for an additional year. The funds will come from the arena’s operational budget.
 

MPP’s office reopens to visitors

Sault Ste. Marie MPP Ross Romano has fully reopened to visitors. With COVID-19 health and safety protocols in place, Romano’s office says staff members have made the necessary changes to the office to make in-person visits as safe as possible.
