Taxi prices going up

A report indicated this week, grabbing a cab in Greater Sudbury is now harder to afford. The cities’ finance committee has given the greenlight to allow cab companies to raise rates by five per cent, making a cab ride in Greater Sudbury among the most expensive in Northern Ontario. In keeping with the increase (in the minimum wage) from $11.60/hr to $14/hr, taxi owners state that this increase will be detrimental to their continued operation if similar increases are not added.
 

Wanted: Justin Danis, 27


West Nipissing Police are searching for a wanted 27-year-old man. Justin Danis. Danis is wanted in connection to a break and enter in the West Nipissing area. Once inside Danis allegedly removed items including a television and numerous power tools.  Anyone with information on Danis’ whereabouts is urged to contact the police or local crime stoppers.
 

$15 million headed to Timmins Transit

More transit funding is coming to Northern Ontario, this time in Timmins. The Federal Government have announced more than $15 million will be coming. A new release says Timmins would be receiving a federal allocation of $8.4 and a provincial allocation of $6.9.  It was not clear when the when the funding will be available nor what exactly it will be spent on.
 

Sault College looking for a rink

Sault College is putting in a request for a rink. They’ve gone to city council this week asking that they be considered an alternate location for one of the additional ice surfaces the city is considering replacing the aging McMeeken Centre.  They say that a home arena on campus will be unique to Sault College amongst Ontario Colleges creating a competitive advantage that can be leveraged to attract students. Sault College is currently the only college in Ontario with a varsity hockey program for men and women.
 

Sudbury Police look for dangerous driver


Sudbury Police continue to search for a red, two-door vehicle, caught driving dangerously at a high rate of speed on the Lasalle Boulevard extension. At one point weaving dangerously into the oncoming lanes of traffic nearly striking several vehicles, the driver, according to Police did not stop… but was clocked at a wild 157 km/h by police radar.
 

Outbreak of Influenza A at HSN

Health Sciences North is dealing with an outbreak of influenza A. The Hospital says that it’s on the cardiac inpatient unit on the eighth Floor of the North Tower. HSN says a number of measures to deal with this outbreak, including isolation precautions, strict hand hygiene, heightened infection prevention and control surveillance.
