First heat wave of the season hits parts of the North

The first heat event of the season is expected today in portions of the North today. Highs could reach a near 30’ in some places thanks to a hot and somewhat humid airmass moving into Northeastern Ontario today. Environment Canada is encouraging everyone to keep cool by dressing for the weather, and to drink plenty of water.
 

Fatal accident on highway 17

One person is dead and four others have been injured in a multi-vehicle collision. It happened on Highway 17 in Walden Township, between Lively and Whitefish. Police, fire and EMS responded to the call. The Sudbury OPP Crime Unit is continuing the investigation under the direction of the Criminal Investigation Branch.
 

Fire at a North Bay Hotel

No injuries were reported yesterday afternoon in a fire on Lakeshore drive in North Bay. It happened at the Travelodge Inn. There was heavy damaged done to one of the rooms. Fire personnel say that they were able to respond quickly, and that no one was in the room at the time.
 

Farmer’s Market gets shut down… by default

The Mountjoy Independent Farmer’s Market in Timmins has permanently closed after a city council decision to close the Centennial Hall prompting the decision to scrap the ongoing event that was held Saturday mornings. The building located on Park Ave. has been empty and in need of serious repairs.
 

59-year-old charged with impaired driving

Sault Ste. Marie Police have pulled another impaired driver off the road. It happened following a traffic complaint on Highway 17 north of Sault Ste. Marie. A 59-year-old of Goulais Township now has a court date of June 18.

26-year-old North Bay man pleads guilty on multiple charges

A 26-year-old North Bay has pleaded guilty to four charges, including carrying a prohibited weapon and entering a dwelling house. This is after the apparently took over a downtown apartment. When police arrived to assist with an eviction, they found the door to the apartment barricaded. Once inside they discovered weapons and stolen property.
