Fatal fire under investigation

One person is dead, and another person is injured following a structure fire in Greater Sudbury. It happened on Lloyd Street over the weekend. Three units sent 16 firefighters, along with police and paramedics, responded to the call. The fire has since been extinguished, however the investigation into what caused the fire is still underway.
 

100k awarded to University’s refugee’s project

Nipissing University has been awarded a sizable grant. $100,000 all going toward a refugee project. The school says that a Grand Challenges Canada grant will, among other things, go toward helping improve maternal, newborn and child health among South Sudanese Refugees and their host communities in Uganda.
 

Man arrested, following “Incident” in the South End

Timmins Police say one man was arrested, following what they’re calling an incident in the south end of the city. It happened just before the weekend, and while there is little information available, a 31-year-old was arrested without incident. He was charged with mischief under $5000, uttering threats, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
 

Pumper Truck collides with car

A driver is shaken up, and a pumper truck is out of service after the two collided in Sault Ste. Marie Fire. The collision happened just before the weekend on Bay Street. The truck was on its way to a medical call, reports indicate, when the driver of a small car in front of the fire vehicle initially pulled over and then decided to go to the left.
 

50 thousand raised for Alzheimer’s Society

Hundreds of people in Sudbury, Little Current and North Bay have raised $50,000, all for the Alzheimer Society Sudbury-Manitoulin North Bay & Districts. This is thanks to the annual Walk for Alzheimer’s event this past weekend. Organizers say this was one of the largest crowds they’ve seen in over twenty years.
 

Sudbury staff encouraging murals, improvments

Sudbury city staff are recommending that City councilors give the green light, and a fresh coat of paint when it comes to the downtown. Specifically, to approve more than $170,000 for murals and improvements to community town centres. The money coming from the main street revitalization initiative fund, has been allocated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is being funneled through the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.
