Child and Family centre rebrands to “Compass”

The Child and Family Centre are starting the month of July under a new banner. The lead agency for child and youth mental health services for the Districts of Sudbury and Manitoulin, says their name going forward will be Compass. The Child and Family Centre has been providing mental health services to children and youth, since 1999.
 

Callander will go without fireworks, again

Canada Day Celebrations this weekend won’t be quite as spectacular as originally hoped for in Callander. While programming at FunFest in Callander will be going ahead, they dousing the fireworks display. The display is being held off display due to high water levels.
 

Free fishing anyone?

The Province will be making it easier for families to get out and about this Canada Day. Starting tomorrow and going until July 7, Ontarians of all ages can enjoy fishing without requiring a licence. The free fishing week is a welcomed tradition and is the fourth licence-free fishing opportunity this year.
 

$200k will go into mining development

Northern College is getting a two-hundred-thousand-dollar mining research grant from the federal government. The money will go towards hiring someone with the expertise to work with students on developing technology for the mining industry.
 

5 bears spotted in Greater Sudbury

Living in Northern Ontario… it’s not uncommon to see a bear from time to time. But in Sudbury this week, a sleuth of five bears were spotted this weekend in New Sudbury. On someone’s property, the bear and four cubs were caught walking through a yard. They shortly afterwards disappeared into a wooded area. There was no threat to the public.
 

School closure under review

Near North District School Board chairman Jay Aspin says he will review the decision to close Widdifield Secondary School…. The board has instructed education director Jackie Young to bring forward a final staff report on secondary school consolidation. Originally this semester was going to be the school’s last.
 

Sudbury is doing well – Bigger

During his fifth state of the city address… Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger was quick this week to praise his city. In the address yesterday, Bigger says that the city he calls home is starting to attract many outsiders to it local attributes. Among other items, Bigger noted how Sudbury is leading the way regionally, provincially and globally when it comes to environmentally friendly and sustainable approaches and policies.
 

Carousel looking for volunteers

Those hoping to hop on board the train and carousel at the North Bay waterfront may want to consider pitching in. Organizers say that last weekend was the second or third weekend when we had to close one of the carousels due to a lack of volunteers. Those who are interested in keeping the operation spinning are asked to contact the carousel.
