Tax increase on the way in  2021

Greater Sudbury City council says 2021 budget discussions have begun, and a tax hike is on the way. At this week’s finance committee meeting recommend a maximum 3.9 per cent property tax increase “Over 2020 taxation levels, in accordance with the long-term financial plan.” Staff also recommended an increase of 4.8 per cent for water/wastewater rates.
 

Suspicious fire under investigation

Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is investigating what is believed to be a suspicious fire. It happened early yesterday near the Terry Fox Place apartments. Damage is believed to have been confined to trees and fencing in the area. The scene was turned over to city police for investigation.
 

Missing Kayaker found in a joint effort

Local emergency services in Timmins have successfully collaborated in an effort to locate a missing kayaker. It was in the Grassy River area Tuesday evening. The Timmins Police Service, the Timmins Fire Department, the Mountjoy Volunteer Fire Hall and Timmins EMS personnel all responded. The search encompassed a nine-kilometre stretch of the River and adjoining trail systems. The 52-year-old woman from Porcupine was treated for dehydration and other exposure-related issues and released.
 

Matawa “Recreation Complex” bid for federal aid turned down

The Town of Mattawa has been turned down by the federal government for funding to help build a $25-million recreation complex. Mayor Dean Backer says the community is working out of three derelict buildings in the library, the curling club, and the recreation centre… and while disappointed, municipal officials are ready to work to secure funding for the project another way.
 

$194k approved for multi-use pad

Timmins City council members hope a new addition at Roy Nicholson Park, will increase local usage. Located at the corner of Eighth Avenue and Pine Street North, a multi-use pad has been given approval to the tune of $194,000 to make the project a reality.
 

Sault College freshman are being given a pass, on withdrawing

Full-time first-year students at Sault College are being given an extended withdrawal period, with no financial or academic penalty. Extended until Oct. 9th, students who choose to step back will receive a full refund, including their tuition fees and ancillary fees, all in the face of the ongoing pandemic.

SportsPlex in Greater Sudbury reopens

Following consultations with Public Health Sudbury & Districts, the City of Greater Sudbury has re-opened the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex. The facility says they are taking bookings as early as tomorrow. The city says they have been working closely with the health unit to keep an eye on the numbers.
 

Please, day time donations only – Rebuilt Resources

North Bay residents are being reminded, to be mindful when making donations. This if after a number of people vandals tore apart the boxes left in front of rebuilt resources. The entire episode was caught on camera. The second-hand hub says donations should always be made during business hours.
