TDHA limiting the number of visitors due to COVID-19 numbers

Timmins and District Hospital have implemented further visitor restrictions, due to the number of COVID-19 cases in the community. Starting today, no “designated care partner visitation” will be allowed until further notice with a few exceptions. They include those giving birth or in pediatrics, for those dealing with physical or cognitive impairments, mental health, for those under 18, over 75, or palliative. Television production closes playground today in Greater Sudbury

A commercial television production will temporarily close a portion of the Doug Mohns Playground today in Greater Sudbury. It’s all happening at 100 Field St. in Capreol. Filming is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents are kindly asked to avoid interrupting film crews at work and to respect any crowd control measures in place. The city says that the industry, despite the pandemic, generates millions of dollars and hundreds of jobs each year in Greater Sudbury.
 

Collision closes HWY-17 west of North Bay

A portion of Highway 17 west of North Bay was closed for a time yesterday, following a collision. The road was closed in both directions at Nova Beaucage Road at around 3:30 pm. It is unclear whether there were any injuries in the collision.
 

OPP looking for SUV following a hit-and-run

Manitoulin OPP is looking to identify a black SUV that was reportedly involved in a hit and run. It happened on Meredith Street in Manitowaning on Friday. Officers responded around 10:55 p.m. to a single motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian, the OPP said in a release. The pedestrian suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital. The driver did not stop and continued south on Highway 6.
The vehicle was described as a black SUV which, as a result of the collision, was missing its mirror on the passenger side and may have had additional damage on the same side.
 

Sidewalk replacement going ahead in North Bay

The City of North Bay will replace three sections of sidewalk on Algonquin Avenue starting today. It’s between Jane and Bloem Street starting Monday. The work is expected to be completed by May 28. Algonquin Avenue will remain open to traffic, although lane closures will be in effect.
 

Peregrine falcons nesting on the bridge once again

A pair of peregrine falcons are once again, unknowingly gaining some attention, as they’ve nested on the Sault’s International Bridge. The International Bridge Administration said the birds successfully nested atop the bridge between Canada and the U.S. this spring, laying three eggs in their nesting boxes. Since the nesting boxes were installed in 2010, 30 falcon chicks have hatched on the bridge.

House pricing going up up up in Greater Sudbury

Sudbury seeing one of the largest drops in housing affordability in Canada. New reports indicate the city has seen a double-digit drop in affordability in the last quarter at 11.2 percent. That said, although the single quarter drop is rare, it’s not expected to last past the pandemic.
 

Algoma U partnering for Lake Superior study

Algoma University is one of several partnering universities, studying the Lake Superior watershed. The study, slated for the summer will be done with Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, and two US-based schools. It’s all for the health of the Great Lake moving forward. The project has been made possible by a $135,000 grant from the Federal Government.
 

Bike Patrols in effect in North Bay

North Bay City Police, has resumed bike patrol. In effect throughout the warmer months, the bikes will primarily patrol the downtown core and surrounding neighbourhoods. The hope is to engage residents as needed. The e-bikes are fully equipped with police lights and sirens and can reach a top speed of 42km/h.
