Cambrian announced a boost in enrollment

Cambrian College in Greater Sudbury is having one of its best starts to the fall when it comes to enrollment. Just over 4,700 (4,713) students enrolled in full-time studies, a five percent increase compared to last year.
 

OPP investigating a fatal collision

OPP with the Almaguin Highlands detachment is investigating a fatal collision. It happened yesterday in Laurier Township. Police say it happened at approximately 2:45 p.m. and that it was a single-vehicle crash that occurred on Forestry Road. A 68-year-old driver, was south on Forestry Road when he lost control of a UTV and drove into the west ditch.
 

James Bay OPP charge driver following a flight from Police

James Bay OPP has a 32 male in custody following a flight from Police. It began with traffic stop on Government Road in Kapuskasing. Shortly after speaking with the driver, he fled the scene. Approximately 10 minutes later, officers responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 11 involving the same vehicle west of Moonbeam. The driver of the motor vehicle was uninjured and had fled the scene on foot. A K-9 unit was called in, the male was located and taken into custody.

One person has been charged following a flight from Police. It happened in the Kapuskasing area yesterday following a break and enter. Police said the break-in that caused damage at an Ottawa Street residence happened sometime between Oct. 12 at 9 p.m. and Oct. 13 at 7 a.m. A 32-year-old will now answer to a raft of charges… fleeing from police following a traffic stop before he was located and arrested.
 

Sault Ste Marie’s unemployment on the rise

Sault Ste. Marie’s unemployment rate is on the rise. That is based on stats compiled by the Algoma Workforce Investment Corp. The monthly data show that the Sault’s unemployment rate in September was 9.3 percent, up from 8.1 percent in August. The overall unemployment rate is higher than both the provincial and national rates.
 

Cambrian College announces a reduction in emissions and utility costs

Cambrian College has announced next steps to reduce carbon emissions and utility costs. They’ve entered an agreement with Honeywell to replace aging equipment and update lighting. The work is projected to save the college at least $480,000 within the first year. Upgrades include upgraded LED lighting and the replacement of an end-of-life air-cooled chiller with a high-efficiency unit to help improve occupant comfort.
 

No major injuries following Sault Ste Marie Fire

There were, thankfully, no injuries to report following a fire in Sault Ste. Marie. It happened in a multi-unit building in the 0-100 block of Elgin Street. Upon arrival, smoke was visible from the road. Crews were able to contain and extinguish the fire. Further investigation revealed the cause of the fire was electrical in nature.
 

U of Sudbury announces a new agreement with Kenjgewin Teg

University of Sudbury has penned a new agreement with Kenjgewin Teg. The school is transferring what’s known as its intellectual property in a number of Indigenous Studies online courses that were previously part of the university’s Indigenous Studies department to Manitoulin School. The secondary school now in turn, intends to provide Northern students and communities with a high-quality education in Indigenous studies that is managed by and for Indigenous peoples.
 

Deadline looming for North Bay staff to get vaccinated

Time deadline for North Bay city staff is expiring. The expectation is for those who can have two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine starting tomorrow. The Canadian Union of Public Employees, or CUPE Local 122 representing City of North Bay workers, has responded by asking the city to grant an extension and provide better clarification regarding the COVID-19 policy. They say in short, in other healthcare settings and municipalities, the policy was out months before the vaccination deadline.
 

YES Outdoor Theare planned for next summer in Greater Sudbury

Greater Sudbury says that by next fall, YES Theatre is planning to open a $2.8-million outdoor theatre space at 131 Durham Street. The project, in close proximity to both Place des Arts and the Sudbury Theatre Centre, is slated to play an important role in establishing a large-scale theatre festival.
 

Renos going ahead on Sundridge and District Medical Centre

Renovations on Sundridge and District Medical Centre is expected to begin next month. Requests for proposals went out during the first week of October, a process expected to last four weeks. Once the contract is awarded, the work will begin immediately.
 

Section of Terry Fox Trail in Timmins Closed for Repairs

Meanwhile, a section of the Terry Fox trail in Timmins is closed for repairs. The first 200 meters of the multiuse path, north of Dalton Road will be closed for the next two to three weeks. The closure is to allow for contractors to do remediation work.
 

Watch your speed say OPP

Kirkland Lake OPP is reminding drivers to watch their speed. Numbers from the long weekend say that 42 drivers were pegged for speeding. A Provincial Traffic Safety Campaign over the Thanksgiving Long Weekend that ran from Friday, October 8, through to Monday, October 11th.
