Man dies after being struck by a car

An 85-year-old man has died following a motor vehicle collision in the city of the Sudbury. It happened at around 10:30pm yesterday on Paris Street, when the man who was riding his bike at the time, was struck by a 25-year-old driver who fled the scene. Katelyn Dunn from Sudbury Police says the driver is facing a number of charges.

The male cyclist was transported to HSN where he succumbed to injuries.


Two hikers fight off bear

Two hikers are recovering from recovering after a bear attack. It happened on Monday evening, in Sudbury. It all began on wooded trail south of the city when their dog came into contact with a black bear. The bear chased to dog back to the hikers, where it turned on the two hikers themselves. The two hikers fought back, punching the bear until it left off. The hikers then made their way to safety before being taken to HSN.


2 dead following apartment blaze

Two people have been found dead in a Mattawa residence, following a blaze over the weekend. The residence contained three separate units. Mattawa OPP officers along with the Mattawa Fire Department and the Papineau-Cameron Township Fire Department responded to the blaze, which remains under investigation.


Stars and Thunder Festival on Council agenda this week

Timmins city council says that the Stars and Thunder festival will make another appearance, at city council this week. Council is holding a special meeting Wednesday afternoon to discuss a number of items including a request for a committee of councillors to take over the festival. The meeting will be on Wednesday in Council Chambers.


Back to school safety priority

Today is back to school day for students and North Bay and Timmins. And as such, Police are out are in full force. Kate Catin is with Timmins Police and explains exactly Police are looking for.


Damage pegged at 50k following fire

Ten people were evacuated, one injured, and five have been displaced following an apartment fire in Capreol. Greater Sudbury Fire Services say they were called at just after 1:00am Monday. It was on Sellwood Street. It took 14 firefighters and six vehicles from two vehicles to get the fire under control. Damage is pegged at $50,000.


Charges pending following collision

Charges are pending on one North Bay driver who reportedly drove into the front of the beer store on Main Street West. Both the window of the store shattered and the brick building was damaged. The vehicle also sustained damage.


Break-under investigation

North Bay Police are looking in to a break and enter that took place at Vic’s Shoe Repair on Shireff Avenue. It happened between Saturday and Sunday. After gaining access to the building, the alleged thieves took a small amount of cash. The investigation is ongoing.


Labor force a focus

Canada’s labour force was the focus for a number of people this weekend, including MP for Timmins James Bay; and Timmins Mayor Steve Black. Discussions revolved around the impact of automation on jobs, and the need for a universal pharma care program. Similar efforts happened in North Bay.
