Incident on edge, ends with out injury

No one was hurt, following a tense moment just before the weekend. The Greater Sudbury Police say they were called to the Beatty Street Bridge train where they say they talked a woman in distress down from the Beatty Street edge. The incident closed several roads as emergency responders assisted in the situation which was resolved without further incident.


No signs at election time?

The idea of a no election sign proposal in North Bay will be dealt with at the next North Bay city council. The issue that’s been the topic of some conversation for the past years, is expected to be discussed by council Tuesday.


Cruiser get’s swiped following call for assistance

Timmins Police say one of their vehicles fell into the wrong hands just before the weekend. This is after city cops responded to a call for service involving a suspicious person. During the course of the call, a Timmins Police vehicle was stolen. Roughly an hour later, with help from the OPP, the vehicle was located in the area of Norman Street and Lafleur Boulevard. The suspect was arrested and the incident remains under investigation.


Pedestrian killed in mall parking-lot

A Sault Ste. Marie woman has succumbed to injuries following an accident at the Station Mall’s parking lot. It happened early Saturday afternoon. The vehicle, eastbound at the west end of the mall, hit the northwest entrance to Walmart. The car continued along the walkway at the mall’s north side and struck the 58-year-old woman. That incident is also under investigation.


The run for Terry, celebrates 37-years

Yesterday was the 37th year of the Terry Fox Run. Runs took place all across the country, and right here at home in the North. It was back in 1980 when Terry Fox began the marathon the year before in Newfoundland, hoping to reach British Columbia by running across the country all in the name of Cancer Research. To date, over $750 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry’s name.


Local Prof is honored

Laurentian University’s Dr. Carol Kauppi was in Ottawa just before the weekend. The researcher was honoured by , Governor General David Johnston before the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council her accomplishments in working to understand homelessness in Northern Ontario.


State of the art facility, equipment is coming

Researchers at Nipissing University say they’re getting a new state-of-the-art lab facility and a piece of specialized equipment, that analyzes organic molecules. This is all thank thanks to federal funding boost of just over $350,000, provided through the Canada Foundation for Innovation.


The fight against homelessness continues

The fight against homelessness is once again coming to Timmins. A fall summit, put on by Living Space is aiming to bring together different community members to develop a system to help end homelessness in northern communities. The summit will run from September 27th to 28th at Northern College.
A Manitoulin Island Mayor has rejected the idea of hunting nuisance deer, inside a residential area, sending the meat to local Island food banks. Gore Bay Mayor Ron Lane says to have an open season on deer, in town, is well meaning… but he’s simply not sure how it would be possible.


Pizza shop robber wanted

A Sudbury Pizzeria has been the scene of a robbery. It all began when a man entered Topper’s Pizza on King Street in Greater Sudbury, displayed a knife and demanded money from the woman working the cash. The man took a sum of money and left the store on foot heading along King Street towards Clinton Avenue. The cashier did not sustain any injuries as a result of this incident. The man is described as Caucasian, approximately 5’6”-5’8” tall, in his late 20’s to early 30’s. He has dark, curly shoulder length hair and he has a full beard with a long goatee. The man was last seen wearing a black and blue sweater and blue jeans.
