New measures coming into place for two Health Unit Areas

Public Health Sudbury & Districts is reinstating work-from-home requirements as of today. This is as COVID-19 case rates remain at what the health unit calls “unacceptably high levels” The medical officer of health is reinstating work-from-home requirements, revoked by the province on July 15, issuing strong recommendations for COVID-19 protections to area schools, businesses, and organizations, and enacting stricter measures for the follow up of contacts of cases of COVID-19.
Meanwhile, 
Algoma Public Health Unit is ordering more mandatory measures to further limit gathering numbers and restrict high-risk close contact activities. This is includes team sports, to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. Gathering limits with a maximum of 10 people indoors and 25 people outdoors will be in place for Christmas and will remain in effect until at least Tues. Dec. 28th.
Also, APH is reporting one new COVID-19 Death. It is the region’s 15th death related to COVID-19. Out of respect for the family, no further information is being shared.
 

Outbreak declared at Lockerby Composite School in Greater Sudbury

An outbreak of COVID-19 has been declared at Lockerby Composite School in Greater Sudbury. Two cases of the virus have been identified among students. A letter has gone out to parents and guardians from the Rainbow District School Board. The school remains open for in-person learning.
 

Northern College signs deal with Algonquin College in Ottawa

Northern College has signed a Memorandum of Understanding Algonquin College in Ottawa. It will see a two-year Agriculture Business program offered at Northern’s campuses beginning in the fall of next year. Algonquin launched its own Business Agriculture program at its Perth Campus in 2018.
 

Traffic Accident brings down traffic lights

There is no word of injures nor what lead to the collision at the intersection of McNabb Street and Great Northern Road Saturday afternoon. It was so involved, it took down traffic lights and left a vehicle badly damaged. A portion of the intersection was closed to traffic around 3 p.m.
 

Algoma U is well ahead of enrolment targets

Algoma University says even with the Pandemic, they are three years ahead in enrolment targets. Priorities over the next five years will include the strategic introduction of new programmings such as master’s degrees and the development of academic programs aligned with the Ontario Mental Health and Addictions Research and Training Institute (OMHARTI). The school is on track to exceed 3,000 full-time equivalent students across Algoma’s three campuses, putting the institution three years ahead in achieving that milestone.
 

Temiskaming Shores announced “National Addictions Awareness” week

The Council for the City of Temiskaming Shores says this week is official “National Addictions Awareness” week. Proclaimed over the weekend, it is for November 21 to November 27. The goal is to provide support for victims and their families, by providing individual support and community programming.
