Sudbury Council slated to make “rezoning decision” decision tonight

Sudbury city council is slated to meet tonight. They will decide on a pair of rezoning applications that, upon approval, would pave the way for the development of the Kingsway entertainment district. The proposed development on the Kingsway would eventually be the home to the city’s new $100 million hockey dollar arena, and Gateway Casino’s privately-run gaming centre.
 

Wanted: Julie Savard, 23


The Greater Sudbury Police continue their search for a woman wanted for assault. 23-year-old Julie Savard. Savard is wanted on three counts of assault with a weapon, while under court-ordered conditions. She’s described as being 5-3, 125 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
 

Powassan getting a $1.4 mil upgrade

The Municipality of Powassan is getting a facelift… to the tune of $1.4 million dollars. Moreover, the funds have come in for a rehabilitation of its main street. The work will be done from the Valley View East Intersection to the North Powassan entrance thanks to the community’s successful Top-Up allocation-based component of the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund. The work will involve the removal of existing damaged curb, sidewalk and gutter and replacement.
 

Support for purposed aquatic centre growing

Support for the new proposed multi-use aquatic centre in Timmins is gaining support, even if it’s incremental, from the business community. Back in the fall, a survey from the Timmins Chamber of Commerce showed that 20 per cent would be willing to financially back the $48 million-dollar facility, if approved. Last month? That number jumped to 26.
 

Accident sends two to hospital

Police and firefighters in Sault Ste. Marie say that a three-vehicle crash late yesterday is under investigation. It happened at corner of Lake Street and MacDonald Avenue. While a woman and her infant child were sent to hospital, thankfully, it was only for a “very minor” injuries, and mostly for a once over from doctors. Further details on the crash have not been released.
 

Male in custody, weapon seized

A 28-year-old North Bay man is in custody after an allegedly confronting a second in the south end the city with an edged weapon. It happened outside of a business on Lakeshore Drive. Following a struggle, the accused fled but was arrested a short distance away.
