North Bay says “No” to snow

The movie industry in the north, is getting some cold news. The city of North Bay says a chemical product that’s commonly used by the film industry to create artificial snow has been banned, due to environmental concerns. The city says, in short, the class A foam fire retardant, used to battle forest fires, consists mainly of ammonium phosphate. While there is some call to review the decision, the city encourages production companies to meet with the economic development office to explore alternatives.
 

Fire sends one to hospital

A fire has sent one to hospital. It was in Greater Sudbury Woman over the weekend, after a blaze broke out at an apartment building in Minnow Lake. A total of 21 firefighters responded to the blaze from four different fire stations responded to the barry street blaze to find that a candle that caused a mattress to catch fire. In total, four of the units in the building were damaged by fire and smoke. Damage estimates are around $300,000. One woman was sent to hospital for treatment.
 

Weapons charges laid in West Nipissing

Four people are facing weapons charges. This is in West Nipissing after police responded to a weapons complaint just before the weekend near a Sturgeon Falls high school. Police say individuals in a motor vehicle were at the school looking for a student. While stopped near the school, firearms were displayed by one of the vehicle’s occupants. A further search discovered a number of edged weapons were also found.
 

Timmins winter parking ban in effect

Timmins Residents have joined the overnight Winter Parking ban. Heading into a fresh week, the City of Timmins says that residents will be able to park their car on the street between 11:30pm and 7:30am, unless otherwise posted. The city says any cars still on the street could get a $75 fine. The overnight parking ban runs until April 30th.
 

Steel numbers are up at Algoma

Numbers are up for Steel in the North. Specifically, Algoma in Sault Ste. Mare says they’ve earned $1.3 billion in revenue in the first six months of the 2019 financial year. That’s up from $1.05 billion in the first half of the 2018 fiscal year. Sales to customers in the United States stood at $785.6 million, or 59 per cent. Canadian customer sales totaled $510.8 million, or 38 per cent of total sales.
 

Searchmount Sold

Searchmont Ski Resort in Sault Ste. Marie has a buyer. The new owner is Wisconsin Resorts, a company that owns four ski resorts in the United States, including *Pine Knob* in Clarkston, Michigan. While there is no word as to the bill of sale, the deal includes all land and facilities.
